Concordia University Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A) Music is a four-year full-time undergraduate degree in Montreal, Canada. The program requires strong audition or portfolio performance and welcomes international students. Total tuition ranges from C$139,200 to C$172,800 (INR 96.36 Lakhs to INR 1.20 Crore) over four years. Intakes in Fall (September) and Winter (January) occur annually. Students aged 18+ with secondary education (10+2 equivalent) qualify. The program trains musicians, composers, producers, and arts managers through hands-on training in performance, arrangement, and music technology. What distinguishes Concordia’s Music program is its flexibility — after first year, students choose specialization tracks in Performance, Composition, or remain in the broader Major. Ideal applicants combine technical musicianship with creative ambition and adaptability to collaborative learning environments.

Concordia’s two-campus model in downtown Montreal offers dynamic urban music culture alongside residential green space at Loyola campus. The university sits in the heart of North America’s second-largest francophone city, a live-music hub with professional orchestras, festivals, and recording studios. Students gain real-world experience through co-curricular performances, student ensembles, and industry partnerships. The program balances classical foundations with contemporary genres — jazz, electronic music, songwriting, and music production — preparing graduates for diverse career paths in an evolving musical landscape.

  • Flexible specialization pathways: choose performance, composition, or interdisciplinary music at the end of first year.
  • Urban music ecosystem: access to Montreal’s professional orchestras, festivals, studios, and live-music venues.
  • Dual campus access: downtown Sir George Williams campus for classes plus residential Loyola campus for student life and housing.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the Fall 2026 intake are Closed. The international student deadline was 01 February 2026. For Winter 2027 intake, applications open in June 2026 with deadline 01 November 2026. Key fee points: All international tuition is fixed per credit across the four-year degree, with no mid-program increases. Health insurance is mandatory and charged automatically on registration; India is not on Quebec’s reciprocal social-security list, so Indian students cannot opt out. The application fee of C$108 includes GST; admission deposit is non-refundable and credited toward first-semester tuition.

Tip for Indian students: Budget an additional C$3,000–C$4,000 annually for music-specific costs: private lesson fees, instrument maintenance, performance travel, and ensemble participation. These are not included in tuition but are part of the program experience.

Concordia University B.F.A Music Admission 2026

Concordia welcomes international students across two annual intakes. Academic entry requires secondary completion (10+2 equivalent or higher) with strong grades. All applicants must demonstrate music aptitude through audition or creative portfolio, weighted equally in admissions decisions.

Intake Typical Start Date Application Period
Fall (primary intake) September 2026 Applications closed (Feb 1 deadline)
Winter (secondary intake) January 2027 Opens June 2026; closes Nov 1, 2026

Academic Eligibility

Applicants must hold secondary education equivalent to Ontario Grade 12 (or equivalent in your country). Average entry: 70%+ is competitive; Music audition/portfolio is decisive. Concordia’s overall rank is #45 in QS World University Rankings 2026, placing it in Canada’s top 15 research universities and strengthening graduate prospects across disciplines.

For Indian applicants: You must submit WES-evaluated transcripts; evaluation takes 4–6 weeks. Upload only the WES official report, not raw school documents. Concordia accepts school-leaving exam scores (CBSE, ICSE, ISC 12th) with WES evaluation.

English Language Proficiency (ELP)

International applicants from non-English-speaking countries must meet one of the minimum thresholds below. ELP exemptions apply only if you completed secondary/post-secondary education in English-medium instruction for the past 4+ years.

Test Overall Minimum Component Minimums
IELTS (Academic) 6.5 Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0, Listening 6.0, Speaking 6.0
TOEFL iBT 90 Reading 21, Writing 21, Listening 21, Speaking 23
Duolingo English Test 120 No component breakdown; composite score only
Pearson PTE Academic 68 No component breakdown; composite score only

Indian applicant ELP reality: IELTS 6.5 is achievable with 2–3 months’ targeted prep; focus on writing and listening to reach component minimums. TOEFL 90 requires similar prep but emphasizes reading comprehension. Most Indian students apply with IELTS. Test scores are valid for two years from test date; plan to test 6–8 months before intake to allow time for application processing.

Tip for Indian students: Book your IELTS exam 6–8 months before your target intake. Testing slots fill quickly in India; delays can cost you the cycle. Begin preparation immediately after secondary exams.

Concordia University B.F.A Music Application 2026

The application process involves three simultaneous streams: general undergraduate application, music audition/portfolio submission, and credential evaluation. Completing all three before the deadline is critical for international students.

Intake Application Deadline Audition/Portfolio Deadline Status
Fall 2026 March 1, 2026 March 1, 2026 Closed
Winter 2027 November 1, 2026 November 1, 2026 Expected

Step 1: Prepare WES evaluation Submit your secondary transcripts to WES (4–6 weeks processing). Request the official report be sent directly to Concordia Admissions.

Step 2: Create an admissions portal account Visit concordia.ca/admissions and register. Upload WES report, ELP test result, and proof of secondary completion. Pay C$108 application fee online.

Step 3: Submit music audition or portfolio Submit via the music application portal by March 1 (or November 1 for Winter intake). Audition can be in-person (if in Canada) or recorded video (5–10 minutes of prepared pieces). Portfolio should include 3–5 original compositions or arrangements with brief artist statements. Both are weighted equally.

Step 4: Await decision Decisions are released April–May (Fall intake) or December–January (Winter intake). Conditional acceptance is common pending final secondary grades. Non-refundable C$100 confirmation deposit is due within 2 weeks of acceptance to secure your place.

Application tip: Submit 2–3 weeks before the deadline to allow time for technical issues and document corrections. Audition videos should have clear audio and professional presentation; poor video quality can negatively impact decision-making.

Concordia University B.F.A Music Scholarships 2026

Concordia offers scholarship support for international students, though competition is moderate. Most scholarships favor high-entry-average students and successful auditioners. Average awards range from C$2,000 to C$16,000 per year.

Scholarship Level Award (CAD) Award (INR) Eligibility
Entrance Scholarship Undergraduate Up to C$4,000 (one-time, first year) Up to INR 2.77 Lakhs Top admission average; automatic consideration
Merit Scholarships (by Faculty) Undergraduate C$2,000–C$16,000 per year INR 1.38–11.07 Lakhs per year Strong academic record; faculty-based awarding
Presidential Scholarship Undergraduate Full tuition + fees + living support Variable (full cost of attendance) Exceptional achievement; highly competitive; automatic consideration

Scholarship awards are not automatically applied to international students. Eligibility depends on your admission average, audition strength, and Faculty of Fine Arts recommendation. Most international B.F.A students receive partial or no scholarship support. Many bridge the gap through student employment (20 hours/week permitted during studies) or parental funding.

Scholarship reality: Plan to fund the full cost from your family or work-study earnings. Scholarships are a bonus, not a baseline. Concordia does not offer need-based aid to international students, only merit-based awards.

Many music graduates supplement teaching or freelance income with touring, studio projects, or composition licensing.

Honest take: Music careers require entrepreneurship. Performance salaries are project-based; education roles offer stability but lower entry salaries. Audio engineering and arts administration offer higher ceilings. Plan a diverse income portfolio.

B.F.A Music FAQs

Ques. Do I need classical music background to get into Concordia’s B.F.A Music program?

Ans. No. Concordia accepts auditions across all genres — classical, jazz, contemporary, electronic, and songwriting are equally valued. The audition assesses your musicianship depth, not a specific style. Many Indian students enter with Indian classical training (Hindustani/Carnatic) and transition smoothly to Western genres; audition panels appreciate diverse backgrounds.

Ques. What if I can’t attend an in-person audition in Canada?

Ans. Recorded auditions are fully accepted and evaluated equally with in-person auditions. Video format requirements are flexible — professional quality is not necessary, but clear audio and stable camera work are required. Many Indian applicants submit high-quality smartphone video from their home city or pre-recorded studio session.

Ques. Can I work while studying B.F.A Music at Concordia?

Ans. Yes. International students are permitted 20 hours/week of off-campus work during academic semesters and full-time work during scheduled breaks (Christmas, summer). Many music students work as session musicians, private teachers, or studio technicians to offset living costs and build professional networks.

Ques. What is the difference between the B.F.A Major and the B.F.A Specialization in Music?

Ans. The B.F.A Major offers broad flexibility — you take 60 credits in music plus 60 in electives, allowing exploration of composition, performance, and supplementary disciplines. The Specialization (Performance or Composition) deepens one track: 90+ music credits with fewer electives. Most first-year students choose Major; after semester 1 or 2, strong performers transition to Specialization. Both lead to the same B.F.A degree.

Ques. Is there a pathway from B.F.A Music to work visa and PR in Canada?

Ans. Yes. Graduates are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (up to 4 years). After 12 months of full-time Canadian work experience, you can apply for permanent residence via Express Entry or Quebec PNP. Income thresholds (typically C$62,000+ annually) are achievable in music education, arts management, and audio production roles. Many Concordia graduates transition to PR status within 3–5 years.
