Concordia University Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) Economics Admission

Concordia admits international students to the B.Com Economics program for Fall and Winter intakes. Below are the intake windows and academic requirements.

Intake Program Start International Deadline Status
Fall 2026 September 2026 1 February 2026 Closed
Winter 2027 January 2027 1 August 2026 Open
Fall 2027 September 2027 1 February 2027 Opens January 2027

Academic Eligibility for International Students

  • Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0 on a 4.30 scale (equivalent to B grade average).
  • Mathematics prerequisite: Grade B+ or higher in your most recent high school or college math course.
  • Your secondary (high school) transcript is required; the average of your top 5 courses determines admission standing.
Honest Take: Concordia’s 3.0 GPA threshold is moderate. However, competitive JMSB applicants typically average 3.3–3.5 GPA. Math proficiency is critical; weak calculus or algebra scores may trigger additional assessment.

English Language Proficiency (International Students)

International students must demonstrate English proficiency unless exempt by study history. Below are the minimum scores accepted by Concordia.

Test Minimum Overall Per-Component Minimum
IELTS (Academic) 6.0 5.5 in all bands
TOEFL iBT 70 No per-component minimum published
Duolingo English Test 105 No per-component minimum
PTE Academic 50 No per-component minimum
Cambridge C1 Advanced 175 No per-component minimum
  • IELTS 6.0 is the baseline; JMSB typically expects 6.5+ for competitive applicants.
  • TOEFL 70 is the published minimum, but 80+ is competitive for business programs.
  • Indian applicants commonly use IELTS; preparation timelines are 8–12 weeks for a band improvement.
Tip for Indian Students: If you score IELTS 5.5–6.0, Concordia offers conditional admission linked to an English bridge program (usually 4–8 weeks pre-semester). This is a valid pathway; many international students follow this route.

Concordia is a mid-to-large public English-language research university in Montreal, Quebec. QS Global Ranking 2025: #465. The university maintains AACSB and EQUIS accreditation (top 1% globally), and John Molson School of Business is ranked #1 in Canada by Bloomberg Businessweek (2025–26).

Concordia University Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) Economics Application

Applications open 6–8 weeks before each intake deadline. Below are the forward-looking cycles relevant to Indian applicants in 2026.

Intake Expected Deadline (International) Status
Winter 2027 1 August 2026 Open
Fall 2027 1 February 2027 Opens January 2027
  • Submit your application early; processing international credentials (WES evaluation) takes 4–6 weeks.
  • Concordia requires WES credential evaluation for all non-Canadian high school diplomas.
  • No separate GMAT/GRE required for undergraduate admission; academic transcript and English test suffice.
Application Tip: The Winter 2027 deadline is 1 August 2026. If you are pursuing WES evaluation, begin the process by mid-June to avoid delays. Late applications may be reviewed on a rolling basis if spaces remain, but early submission improves odds.

Concordia University Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) Economics Scholarships

John Molson School of Business offers limited merit-based scholarships for international students. Most scholarships are automatically considered on admission; separate applications are not required.

Scholarship Type Level Typical Award (CAD) Eligibility
Entrance Scholarship (Merit-based) Undergraduate Up to 4,000 Top admission ranking; automatic on admission
Academic Entrance Awards Undergraduate 8,000–16,000 per year High GPA; merit-based; varies by faculty
JMSB Foundation Scholarships Undergraduate Varies (typically 2,000–5,000) Financial need + academic standing; limited awards

These scholarships typically offset 3–15% of your first-year tuition. External scholarships (from India) and government grants are not available to Canadian institutions. You must secure additional funding through Indian scholarship schemes or family resources.

Scholarship Reality: As an international student, relying entirely on Concordia scholarships is not realistic. Budget for 80–90% of tuition from family resources or personal savings. Scholarships are a supplementary bonus, not primary funding.

Canada Visa Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) Economics

International students are eligible to work in Canada during and after their studies. Below is the visa pathway for Indian students attending Concordia.

  • Apply for a study permit from India; processing takes 4–6 weeks with valid biometrics.
  • Post-graduation, you are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lasting up to 3 years for a 4-year bachelor’s degree.
  • The PGWP allows unrestricted full-time work with any Canadian employer; no job offer is required to obtain it.
  • After 2 years of skilled work in Canada, you are eligible to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence (PR) under federal or Quebec streams.
Visa Reality: The PGWP is a genuine pathway to PR for international graduates. However, PR is not guaranteed; you must meet language, work experience, and financial criteria. Plan for 2–3 additional years in Canada (beyond your 3–4 year degree) if PR is your goal.

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) Economics FAQs

Ques. Is co-op mandatory for the B.Com Economics program at Concordia?

Ans. No. Co-op is optional for the Economics Major. You may choose the standard 90-credit Major (3 years) or the Honours or Specialization track (which include optional co-op). If you pursue co-op, you complete 3 paid work terms (4 months each), extending your degree to 4–4.5 years.

Ques. Can I work off-campus during my studies?

Ans. Yes. On a study permit, international students may work 24 hours per week during semesters and full-time during scheduled breaks (winter, summer). On-campus work does not count toward the 24-hour limit. Many B.Com students work part-time to offset living costs.

Ques. What is the pace of the B.Com program?

Ans. Concordia uses 12-week intensive terms (not typical 13–14 week semesters). This accelerated format compresses course material and requires significant independent study. Most students take 4–5 courses per term (12–15 credits). Workload is moderate but demands self-discipline.

Ques. Are there specializations within Economics at Concordia?

Ans. Yes. After completing core courses, you select 12+ credits of advanced 400-level electives in areas like monetary policy, environmental economics, labor economics, or econometrics. Course selection is flexible; you tailor your track to your interests.

Ques. What is the Indian applicant competitiveness for JMSB admission?

Ans. Concordia admits international students broadly. However, JMSB is competitive; typical admits have 3.3–3.5 GPA and IELTS 6.5+. Math proficiency is critical. Indian students with solid academics and English scores are regularly admitted. However, scholarship offers for Indian students are rare; most fund themselves entirely.

The Bachelor of Commerce in Economics at Concordia is ideal if you seek a rigorous, practice-focused business degree in an English-speaking Canadian city. The 12-week term structure and strong placement outcomes make it attractive for Indian students aiming for finance, consulting, or government careers. However, be prepared for intensive coursework and budget for mostly self-funded education. Post-graduation, the PGWP creates genuine PR pathway opportunities if you pursue Canadian permanent residence.
