- MA in Philosophy at the University of Victoria is offered as a 1-year program by the Department of Philosophy.
- The University of Victoria also ranked 2nd in Maclean’s top Canadian Comprehensive Universities 2019.
- Students will have the freedom to explore everything from moral and political philosophy to metaphysics.
- Students will study advanced philosophy topics, including a seminar on research methods in the field.
- Students will find that the big questions of philosophy are universal and can be applied to the significant issues facing humanity and the ethical dilemmas we each face every day. The study of philosophy can be applied to virtually any discipline, like medicine, science, politics, and law.
- The MA program consists of a minimum of 15 units.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Students must have an undergraduate degree in philosophy or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
- A grade point average of 6.0/9.0 (B+) in the work of the last two years (30 units) leading to the bachelor’s degree.
Indian Student Eligibility:
- Students must complete a Bachelor’s (4 years) degree in philosophy or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Or, students completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- The minimum grade score for a degree should be 7/10 (60%), first class.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

The following required documents are:
- Resume/CV: It is the outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
- Two Letter of Recommendation: Letter of recommendation (combination of professional and academic recommenders) which includes information about the student, their connection with the person they are recommending, their qualification, and the specific skills they have.
- Statement of Purpose: This statement must describe your qualifications and the objectives of your intended educational program.
- Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
- Official Transcripts: Applicants who have attended and/or received degrees from institutions outside the US must provide certified copies and certified English translations of transcripts or records of all previous post-secondary education and of all degrees conferred.
- Sample of written work: A short sample of written work (about 10 pages) must be submitted with the application.
- ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.
