University of Calgary Master of Architecture Admission 2027

The University of Calgary’s Master of Architecture program admits students twice yearly (Fall and Winter intakes). Admission is competitive, with approximately 40-50% acceptance rates. The program prioritizes portfolios demonstrating clear design intent, digital literacy, and conceptual clarity over perfect rendering skills.

Intake Application Opens Deadline Decision Expected Program Starts
Fall 2027 October 1, 2026 January 31, 2027 May 31, 2027 September 2027
Winter 2028 July 1, 2027 November 1, 2027 January 31, 2028 January 2028

Academic Eligibility

All applicants require a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with a minimum 3.0 GPA (75% or equivalent on a 100-point scale). There is no requirement to have studied architecture previously; graduates from civil engineering, interior design, fine arts, or other disciplines are welcome. Applicants must demonstrate design thinking through a portfolio containing 10-15 works that show concept development, material understanding, and spatial reasoning.

  • Bachelor’s degree from any discipline; architecture background preferred but not required.
  • GPA: 3.0 or higher over the final 60 credits of undergraduate study or equivalent.
  • Resume with design experience, volunteer work, internships, or architectural exposure.
  • Three academic or professional references who can speak to design capability and research potential.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements

International students from non-English-speaking countries must demonstrate English language proficiency through standardized test scores. The University of Calgary accepts multiple tests with specific minimum scores for graduate admission to the architecture program.

Test Overall Score Per-Component Minimum
IELTS (Academic) 7.5 6.5 per band
TOEFL (iBT) 105 24-26 per section
PTE Academic 59 (equivalent 73+) 59
Duolingo English Test 135 120 per section
  • IELTS 7.5 is achievable for most Indian applicants within 8-12 weeks of focused prep; target 8.0 for admission confidence.
  • TOEFL 105 typically requires 10-14 weeks of preparation; the listening and reading sections are most challenging for Indian test-takers.
  • PTE and Duolingo are faster and cheaper alternatives; results are available within 48 hours (Duolingo) or 3 days (PTE).
  • Waiver available if you hold a bachelor’s degree from a Canada, UK, USA, Australia, or New Zealand institution.

University of Calgary’s Master of Architecture ranks 151-200 globally in Architecture and Built Environment (QS 2026), placing it in the top architecture programs across North America for professional recognition and industry partnerships.

Tip for Indian students: Credential evaluation through WES typically costs INR 10,000-12,000 and takes 4-6 weeks. Submit your application request to WES by early November to meet the January 31 deadline; WES reports issued late January often miss the deadline.

  • Interviews are rarely offered; admission decisions are based on portfolio quality, academic record, and demonstrated design intent.
  • Portfolio tips: include 10-15 projects showing conceptual thinking, technical skill progression, and personal design voice.

  • Most TA/RA roles involve studio grading, digital fabrication lab supervision, or research support; highly flexible around studio schedules.
  • International Graduate Tuition Award (CAD 3,060 one-time) is provided to eligible graduate students upon admission.
Scholarship Reality: Expect to offset only CAD 3,000-10,000 annually through scholarships. TA/RA work (earning CAD 10,000-12,000 per year) is far more accessible and financially significant for architecture graduate students.

Take-home salary after federal tax (14%), Alberta provincial tax (10-15%), Canada Pension Plan (5.95%), and Employment Insurance (1.63%) typically totals 55-65% of gross. Self-employed architects and design consultants may earn higher gross but face additional tax obligations and business costs. Urban centres like Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver offer the highest concentration of architecture opportunities and highest compensation ranges.

ROI Reality: A CAD 60,000 entry-level salary nets approximately CAD 36,000-39,000 annually after all deductions. This covers living expenses (CAD 21,000-29,000) with modest savings capacity. Salary growth accelerates 3-7 years post-graduation as architects earn licensure and take on project leadership.

International students in Canada’s Master of Architecture program are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which allows open work authorization for a duration matching the program length (up to 3 years for the MArch).
