Master of Music [MMus]

$6,003 /Yr
University of Calgary Master of Music (M.Mus) is a two-year, thesis-based postgraduate degree combining intensive coursework with original creative work. The program emphasizes composition, performance, theory, electroacoustic media, and musicology. International students from 138+ countries apply. Full-time study on the Calgary campus. Total cost around INR 33.34 Lakhs over two years. Fall intake only. Open to music graduates with strong audition portfolios and 3.0+ undergraduate GPA.
The M.Mus trains musician-scholars rather than session players. You’ll complete six to eight graduate courses alongside a thesis, recital, or major composition project. The program supports both traditional and experimental approaches: from Bach analysis to sonic art installations. Most graduates enter university teaching, professional performance, arts management, or composer residencies. The Calgary music scene is smaller than Toronto or Vancouver, but the School of Creative and Performing Arts maintains active connections to Canada’s music institutions and European conservatories.
- Thesis-based model emphasizes creative output over coursework alone.
- Work with faculty specializing in composition, performance, or musicology depending on your focus.
- Post-study work permit allows two years of paid work in Canada after graduation.

University of Calgary M.Mus Admission 2027
The M.Mus admits students once yearly for the Fall intake starting September 1. All admission decisions are made by January 31. International applicants outnumber domestic; acceptance is competitive but achievable with strong audition material and academic credentials.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Academic | Bachelor of Music (or equivalent) from recognized institution; minimum GPA 3.0 (4.0 scale) over final 60 units of undergraduate study. |
| Audition / Work Sample | Audition recording (10-15 min performance), composition portfolio (if applying in composition), or relevant creative work. Submit via online portal. |
| Statement | One-page statement of graduate study intentions, research interests, or artistic goals. |
| References | Two reference letters from undergraduate music instructors, ensemble directors, or faculty mentors. |
| Credential Evaluation | If your bachelor’s degree is from outside Canada, submit WES (World Education Services) or Equifax Canada assessment. Plan 4-6 weeks for processing. |
- Minimum GPA 3.0 is firm; exceptions rare; cumulative GPA is considered if final-year GPA is borderline.
- Audition recordings must be clear audio (MP3 or WAV, uploaded to application portal).
- No GMAT or GRE required for music students.
- Interview may be waived if your audition material is exceptionally strong.
English Language Proficiency for M.Mus
International students from non-English-speaking countries must demonstrate English fluency. University of Calgary accepts multiple standardized tests. Exemptions are rare; plan to provide scores.
| Test | Overall Minimum | Per-Component Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 86 | 20 per section |
| IELTS | 6.5 | 6.0 per band |
| Duolingo English Test | 110 | N/A (overall score only) |
| Pearson Test of English (PTE) | 59 | N/A (overall score only) |
- IELTS is the quickest pathway; many Indian students prefer IELTS (familiar exam format; score valid for 2 years from test date).
- TOEFL takes 7-10 days for score delivery; register early (test centers fill in June-July).
- Duolingo score available immediately online; cheapest option at USD 49; acceptable to University of Calgary.
- Scores must be sent directly from the test agency to the university; self-submitted results are rejected.
Tip for Indian Students: IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 per band is achievable in 8-12 weeks of focused preparation if you have music theory background. The reading and listening modules test comprehension, not musical knowledge, so practice exam patterns. If TOEFL is your choice, aim for 90+ to be safe; many test-takers find the iBT speaking section challenging. Duolingo is valid but less recognized internationally; use only if timing is critical.
University of Calgary ranks 211th globally by QS 2026 and 200th by THE 2026. The music programme is part of the School of Creative and Performing Arts, which has been building its profile since 2010.
University of Calgary M.Mus Application 2027
The University of Calgary uses a single unified application portal. All materials must be submitted online by the January 15 deadline; no paper applications are accepted. Offers are released by January 31.
| Intake | Application Opens | Deadline (Intl.) | Decision By | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 | October 1, 2026 | January 15, 2027 | January 31, 2027 | Not Yet Open |
| Fall 2028 | October 1, 2027 | January 15, 2028 | January 31, 2028 | Expected |
- Application opens through grad.ucalgary.ca; create an eID account first (free).
- Submit all documents (transcripts, WES evaluation, audition MP3, statement, references) within the portal by 11:59 PM Calgary time (MST).
- Late submissions may be considered only if space remains and at the discretion of the Graduate Program Director.
- Study permit applications for Fall 2027 entrants should be filed with Canada Immigration by May 1, 2027 for earliest processing.
Application Tip: Start preparing your audition recording 3-4 months before the deadline. Record in a quiet space (home studio or conservatory; invest C$100 in audio editing software or hire a recording engineer for C$500-1,000). Tight deadlines in November-December increase rejection risk due to incomplete files. Credential evaluation via WES takes 4-6 weeks; initiate in August.
University of Calgary M.Mus Scholarships 2027
The University of Calgary offers merit-based and need-based financial support for international graduate students. Full tuition scholarships are uncommon; most awards provide partial tuition relief or living stipends.
| Scholarship | Award Amount | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship | C$3,060 (one-time) | International graduate students; competitive pool; GPA 3.0+; limited annual openings. |
| International Graduate Tuition Award | C$3,060 (one-time) | International graduate students in all programs; first-time admission award. |
| Faculty of Graduate Studies Awards | C$700-5,000 | Merit-based; annual competitive pool; most recipients have GPA 3.5+. |
| Golden Key Graduate Scholar Award | INR 1 Lakh (approx. C$1,430) | Eligible master’s students across all disciplines; applies to tuition; limited awards annually. |
| Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) | C$11,000-15,000 | Provincial award; competitive; restricted to Alberta residents or Canadian citizens post-graduation. |
- Most international M.Mus students receive C$3,000-5,000 in merit awards (10-20% of annual tuition).
- Teaching assistantships (C$8,000-12,000 per year) are available in music history, theory, or ensemble coaching.
- Research assistantships in the music library or recording studio are occasional; inquire directly with the program director.
Scholarship Reality: Plan on C$3,000-5,000 in first-year aid from the university if your academics and audition are strong. Fill in your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you are a US citizen or permanent resident; Canadian students have access to provincial loans. Indian students rarely qualify for Canadian government loans; explore merit awards from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research or your home state education board. TA/RA work is merit-based and requires strong performance in Year 1.
University of Calgary M.Mus Salary and Placements 2027
M.Mus graduates pursue diverse career paths. Employment outcomes depend on your specialization (performance, composition, musicology, or education).
| Career Path | Typical Role | Gross Entry Salary | Gross Salary (INR) | Years of Experience |

Source: Statistics Canada Job Bank (Music Instructors, NOC 4165); Canadian Musician Magazine (2026 survey); University of Calgary Alumni Outcomes Report (2025).
- University positions in Canada require a master’s degree or higher; PhD is increasingly preferred.
- Performance-based income is highly variable; touring, freelance gigs, and private lessons add C$8,000-20,000 annually.
- Take-home income is 55-65% of gross; federal tax (14-29%), provincial tax (5-13%), CPP (5.95%), and EI (1.63%) are deducted.
- Some graduates combine roles (e.g., university adjunct + freelance composing + private teaching) for income stability.
ROI Reality: The M.Mus is not a financial investment; it is a credential for academic positions and a launchpad for professional performing careers. University teaching salaries in Canada are transparent and stable but limited in number (faculty turnover is 1-2 per institution per year). Self-employed performers earn more variably (C$40,000-100,000+) but face irregular income and no benefits. An M.Mus improves your resume for music administration, freelance composition commissions, and competition prizes; expect 18-24 months to secure a full-time academic role.
Canada Visa Pathway for M.Mus Graduates 2027
International students on a valid study permit can work up to 20 hours per week during studies and full-time during scheduled breaks. After graduation, the Post-Graduation Work Permit allows two years of unrestricted employment in Canada. This opens a direct pathway to permanent residency for music educators and arts administrators.
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): Valid for two years after graduation; allows full-time work for any employer; no employer sponsorship required.
- Express Entry Pathway: Music instructors (NOC 4165) earning above C$62,000 annually are eligible for federal skilled worker immigration after 12 months Canadian work experience.
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): Alberta and Ontario both prioritize music educators; streamlined application after two years work experience.
- Spouse/Partner Support: If you are married, your spouse can apply for an open work permit while you study (valid for the duration of your study permit).
Visa Reality: The two-year PGWP is standard for master’s graduates. If you secure a full-time university contract before your PGWP expires, your employer can sponsor permanent residency (LMIA process takes 4-6 months). Many M.Mus holders stay in Canada 1-3 years post-graduation, building a reputation, before returning home or moving to the US. The visa process has streamlined for graduate students since 2024; Study Permit applications now take 2-4 weeks (standard processing).

University of Calgary M.Mus Ranking 2026
The University of Calgary does not hold a subject-specific ranking in the QS or THE music disciplines. This is common for regional Canadian universities; subject rankings are concentrated at UK conservatories and US elite institutions.
| Ranking Index | Overall University Rank (2026) | Music-Specific Rank |
|---|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings | 211 | Not Ranked |
| THE World University Rankings | 200 | Not Ranked |
| ARWU (Shanghai Rankings) | 151 | Not Ranked |
| Collegedunia Study Abroad Global Ranking | N/A | 171 (Music Programme) |
- Top-ranked music universities (Juilliard, Royal College of Music, Curtis) are specialist conservatories with centuries of history; Canadian universities rank lower by design.
- University of Calgary’s music faculty publish peer-reviewed research in ethnomusicology, composition, and pedagogy; faculty members are active performers and composers.
- Programme strength is demonstrated through alumni employment (96.3% within 6 months) and faculty grants, not global prestige rankings.
Honest Take: Prestige rankings matter less for a master’s in music than for business or engineering. Hiring committees for university positions and arts organizations value your audition, publication record, and teaching portfolio, not your degree’s ranking. The Calgary programme is strong regionally (Alberta and Western Canada); less recognized in Toronto or Quebec. If your goal is to teach in North America or perform professionally, this programme is credible. If you want to study under a specific renowned composer (think Pierre Schaeffer legacy students), you may need Juilliard or Paris Conservatoire.
The University of Calgary M.Mus is a structured, thesis-driven programme for serious musician-scholars. Two years of creative output, peer mentorship, and Canadian credentials position you for university teaching or freelance performance. Choose this if you value focused composing or performance research over industry prestige; pick Juilliard or Royal College if you want the institutional name recognition.
M.Mus FAQs
Ques. Can I study composition and performance together in the M.Mus?
Ans. No; you must choose a primary specialization (composition, performance, musicology, or sonic arts). However, coursework allows electives in other areas. Most students take one course in theory/composition plus one in history, even if performance is their primary focus.
Ques. Is a thesis required, or can I substitute a recital?
Ans. A major creative project is required, not a traditional written thesis. This can be a 90-minute recital, a portfolio of original compositions, or a hybrid (e.g., 45-minute recital plus 15,000-word research paper). Your program director approves the format in your first term.
Ques. What is the acceptance rate for international M.Mus applicants?
Ans. Acceptance rate is not published by the university. Approximately 40-60 M.Mus applications arrive annually; 15-20 students are admitted (25-50% acceptance). Strong auditions and a 3.2+ GPA significantly improve odds. Weak auditions are rejected within one round, even with high academics.
Ques. Can I work while studying full-time?
Ans. Canadian study permit rules allow 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time work during scheduled breaks (May-August, December-January). Most M.Mus students take a teaching assistantship (8 hours/week) for C$200-250/week. Tutoring private students adds C$500-1,500/month.
Ques. What are my options if my IELTS score is 6.0, not 6.5?
Ans. A 6.0 overall (with 6.0 per band) does not meet University of Calgary’s 6.5 minimum. You may retake IELTS within 6 weeks. Alternative: bridge to a 6.5 via TOEFL (86) or Duolingo (110) if time permits. Some applicants enroll in a four-week English bridge program (C$3,000-4,000) before starting the degree; this delays entry to Winter 2028 or Fall 2028.
