University of Calgary BA Psychology Admission

University of Calgary admits international students to the BA Psychology program via a transparent, merit-based pathway. The university ranks 211th globally on QS World University Rankings 2026, signaling research strength and teaching quality across all disciplines including social sciences.

Intake Terms and Application Windows

Psychology offers both Fall (September) and Winter (January) intakes. Fall intake typically sees higher cohort size and scholarship availability; Winter admits are fewer but equally competitive.

Intake Application Opens Supplementary Deadline Status
Fall 2027 01 October 2026 01 February 2027 Not Yet Open
Winter 2028 01 July 2026 01 November 2026 Expected to Open

Academic Eligibility

Applicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent (e.g., CBSE Class XII in India). The program requires completion of high school mathematics and science subjects. A minimum final grade of 70% in high school (equivalent to 6.0/10 in CBSE) is expected; competitive candidates average 75%+.

Academic Requirement Minimum Competitive Range
High School GPA (12th Grade) 70% (6.0/10) 75–85%
Required Subjects Mathematics, English (or equivalent language); Science (Biology or Physics recommended)
Acceptance Rate (Overall) 10–20%
Tip for Indian students: The 10–20% acceptance rate reflects university-wide competitiveness; Psychology is moderately selective within the Faculty of Arts. Strong STEM grades (80%+) and demonstrated research interest improve admission odds significantly.

English Language Proficiency

All international applicants must demonstrate English fluency via a recognized test. IELTS is the most common choice for Indian students due to familiarity and accessibility in India.

Test Minimum Overall Per-Component Minimum Notes for Indian Students
IELTS Academic 6.5 6.0 in each skill Writing band of 6.0+ is the barrier for most Indian test-takers; plan 8–12 weeks of prep.
TOEFL iBT 86 21+ per section Reading and Listening typically strong for Indian students; Speaking and Writing require focused practice.
Duolingo English Test 110 Faster turnaround (1 week); accepted but less widely recognized by scholarship committees.
PTE Academic 59 Computer-based; growing acceptance; accessible in major Indian cities.
  • IELTS 6.5 is the standard entry threshold; a score of 7.0 bolsters scholarship competitiveness.
  • Many Indian students take IELTS 2–3 times to achieve the writing band of 6.0, adding 3–4 months to the timeline.
  • Official test results must reach the university by the supplementary deadline (February 1 for Fall 2027 intake).
  • TOEFL (86 iBT) is easier to achieve for strong communicators in a non-native setting but registration is slower in India.
Honest take: Indian applicants often underestimate IELTS writing; start prep 10–12 weeks before your target test. A 6.5 overall with a 5.5 in writing will be rejected outright, regardless of academic strength.

University of Calgary BA Psychology Application

Stage Deadline Action Required

Expected Admission Decision 31 May 2027 Conditional or unconditional offer letter received; accept or decline within 30 days.
  • WES credential evaluation is required for Indian high school diplomas; order and complete before submitting transcripts.
  • No application fee waiver exists; non-refundable fee is C$145 (INR 10,167), payable during form submission.
  • Conditional offers often depend on final IELTS band (e.g., 6.5 in Writing) or maintaining 75%+ average until graduation.

University of Calgary BA Psychology Scholarships

University of Calgary offers limited but meaningful scholarships for international Psychology students. Merit-based awards typically offset 20–50% of first-year tuition; need-based support is minimal for international applicants.

Scholarship Name Amount CAD Amount INR Eligibility
International Entrance Scholarship Up to C$20,000 Up to INR 14,02,400 First-year international UG; GPA 2.60+ (renewable years 2–4 with 24 units at 2.60+ GPA).
President’s Admission Scholarship Varies (typically C$5,000–C$10,000) INR 3,50,600–7,01,200 Final admission average 95%+ (Class XII 95%+ or equivalent); open to Indian students.
International Student Athletes Award C$10,000 INR 7,01,200 Entering 2nd–4th year; competitive athletes with sport commitment; covers tuition and fees.

A typical Indian student entering with a 78% Class XII average and 7.0 IELTS qualifies for the International Entrance Scholarship (up to C$20,000, INR 14.02 Lakhs) in year 1. Over four years, this scholarship reduces out-of-pocket tuition from INR 1.01 Crore to approximately INR 86.97 Lakhs (assuming renewal). Combined with living costs (INR 1.22 Crore over four years), the total four-year expense becomes approximately INR 2.09 Crore after scholarship.

Scholarship reality: International scholarships are heavily competitive and typically awarded only to top 10–15% of the entering cohort. Plan finances assuming no scholarship; view any award as a bonus, not a safety net.
