Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

After exploring all the universities and the alumni network, I decided to proceed with Melbourne. Finally, after considering my university reputation and my financials, I decided to choose RMIT.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

None

Reason for Rejection

I did not get rejected from any colleges, I was only waitlisted by one of them. Australian Universities have a good acceptance rate thus it makes the process easier.

Tips to enhance your application

It is advised to put job links with detailed description to provide solid proof of one's goal. It is also recommended to put it as one will be returning back after pursuing masters to make it clear and avoid any unnecessary questions .

Admission Experience

  • I first explored USA & Canada, but due to the VISA uncertainties & constant student issues, I decided to proceed with Australia. RMIT was the better choice as it offered a good balance of reputation & academics. Especially for IT courses, it seemed decent enough to pursue academics.
  • Melbourne is often considered to be the IT hub for Australia and RMIT being located in the city centre provides ample opportunities, My experience has been good so far, the studies are difficult for sure compared to the Indian system but it has been fun and a good learning experience.

Class Schedule

7

3-4 lectorials in a week, followed by 2-3 practicals in a week. Timings vary, but students often tend to take up morning lectures. The class strength for lectures would be around 120, and for practicals would be 10-15. For my course, since it is an IT-related course, we do have a lot of Indians. Almost 80% are Indians. Assignments are a nutcracker at times, every day, I had to give at least 2 hours for self-study, including assignments, which is a must.

Faculty

7

Faculties are alright. A few are excellent. The majority of faculties are Asians- mostly Chinese and they are good. Prof Yong. Li from my Practical Data Science course was the best. They do help getting full times but it’s really difficult. It all comes down to luck and timing mostly. People rely only on networking and not faculties for jobs.

Campus Life

10

  • My University has three campuses. The city campus, which holds mostly IT-related courses, is the best when it comes to having events. It has an amazing library with ample resources to study from. We have a Student union that conducts events every Thursday. It often has free Beer & food, DJ and some small fun activities.
  • The RMIT Indian club is the biggest Indian club out there in Melbourne. It conducts amazing events and celebrates almost every festival, so it makes sure we feel at home. The university also runs free dance, acting and jujutsu classes, etc, which are fun to drop by once in a while.

Part Time Jobs

The majority of Indian students prefer working off campus doing Uber Eats or DoorDash. The pay there is per order basis which again comes down to 23-25$ per hour. Apart from these, People often work at Supermarket stores - Coles, Woolies etc like myself. The pay comes to 26-35$ per hour. Getting any jobs is difficult especially in Melbourne at the moment due to the huge intake of students last year. The process of applying for such jobs is online, with attending a physical interview for the last stage.

RA  and TA roles are hard to get, and Only a few students get them, The pay is good, around 50-60$ per hour, which makes it worth the effort. On-campus jobs are also hard to get, with pay ranging from 25-35$. Students often work outside of campus as it is permitted. The maximum hours one can work is 24 hours and unlimited during holidays.

Placement

7

The job market is down currently. The average salary comes to 70,000-90,000$ annually for a beginner. Students find full-time jobs only through networking. No such thing as campus placements happens there. Sometimes people get jobs with salaries over $150K but it’s very rare to happen.

Accommodation

Off Campus

Facebook Marketplace, Domain.au, and Realestate.com.au are a few of the websites people use for finding accommodations. Honestly, finding accommodation in Melbourne is a huge crisis right now. The prices have skyrocketed and people struggle to find affordable places. My recommendation would be to keep looking at these websites and not fall prey to Student accommodation representatives as the prices they offer are a lot more than the market prices.
