A Police Officer is a government employee who safeguards people's lives and property, upholds the rule of law under their jurisdiction and conducts criminal investigations. A Police Officer issues tickets for infractions like traffic infractions and gives testimony in court. They usually provide first aid to victims of crimes or traffic accidents before the paramedics. Based on their qualifications and work history, police officers are assigned ranks.

The Salary of a Police Officer consists of the pay scale, grade pay and allowances. The average grade pay of a Police Officer in India usually ranges from INR 2,400 - 12,000 depending on the rank. Usually for designations such as Constables and Head Constables the Grade Pay starts from INR 2,400 and for higher ranks such as DCP or IG the grade pay usually reaches up to INR 12,000 per month. One of the most crucial determining factors of the salary of a Police Officer is the Pay band. The pay band is usually measured by education pursued, responsibilities, location and multiple other factors.

Candidates who cleared their class 12th board exams can apply for posts such as Constable and Head Constable, while those who have cleared their graduation and relevant entrance exams can apply for higher posts such as Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Sub Inspector and Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The salary of a Police Officer also depends on the revised Pay Commission updates. As per the 6th Pay Commission the monthly salary of a DGI was INR 80,000 with no grade pay while post the updations after the 7th pay commission, the monthly salary of a DGI is INR 2,25,000.
