NIFT 2026 Round 1 seat allotment is out on June 27, 2026, and you must choose your willingness option — Freeze, Float or Slide — and pay the admission fee by July 1, 2026.

After checking your allotted seat on nift.admissions.nic.in, you need to decide which willingness option best fits your priorities. Freeze locks in your current seat permanently. Float keeps you eligible for a better programme or campus in later rounds. Slide lets you seek an upgrade within the same campus only. The right choice depends on how satisfied you are with your Round 1 allotment and how much flexibility you want going forward.

  • Round 1 seat allotment date: June 27, 2026.
  • Willingness submission and fee payment deadline: July 1, 2026.
  • Freeze = seat is final; Float = eligible for upgradation across all campuses; Slide = eligible for upgradation within the same campus (B.Des only).
  • You can downgrade from Float to Slide or Freeze, or from Slide to Freeze — but the reverse is not allowed.
  • Failure to submit willingness and pay fees by July 1, 2026 will result in cancellation of your Round 1 seat.

What Are Freeze, Float and Slide in NIFT 2026 Counselling?

When you receive a seat in the NIFT 2026 Round 1 allotment, you do not simply accept or reject it. You choose a willingness option that decides how the system treats your seat in future rounds. The three options are explained below.

Option What It Means Best For
Freeze Accept current seat as final; no upgradation in further rounds Students fully satisfied with the allotted seat
Float Remain eligible for higher-preference choices across all campuses in further rounds Students who want a better campus or programme and are open to relocation
Slide Remain eligible for higher-preference programmes within the same campus only B.Des students who like their campus but prefer a different programme there

Freeze means you accept the Round 1 allotted seat permanently. You will not participate in further rounds of upgradation. Your admission is secured from this point.

Float means you accept your current seat but remain eligible for an upgrade across all campuses. If a higher-preference programme and campus combination becomes available in Round 2 or later, the system upgrades your seat automatically. If no upgrade is available, you keep your current seat.

Slide is mainly for B.Des students. You accept your current seat but want to be considered for a higher-preferred B.Des programme at the same NIFT campus. You will not be moved to a different campus under this option.

NIFT 2026 Round 1 Seat Allotment: Key Dates

Keep these dates in mind when deciding your willingness option. Missing the July 1 deadline means your Round 1 seat is cancelled.

Event Date
Round 1 Seat Allotment June 27, 2026
Willingness Submission and Fee Payment Deadline July 1, 2026
Last Date for Seat Withdrawal July 17, 2026
Spot Round Begins July 19, 2026

When to Choose Freeze After NIFT 2026 Round 1

Freeze is the right choice in these situations:

  • You got your first or second preference in terms of both campus and programme.
  • You have already begun planning your accommodation and relocation to the allotted city.
  • You do not want any uncertainty — a Frozen seat cannot be taken away in later rounds.
  • You filled only one or two choices and no remaining choice is preferable to what you received.

Choosing Freeze is the safest and most decisive move. Once you Freeze, your seat is confirmed and you skip the waiting period of subsequent rounds entirely.

When to Choose Float After NIFT 2026 Round 1

Float is the right choice when you want an upgrade and are open to changing your campus city or programme. Choose Float if:

  • A higher-preferred programme at a different NIFT campus is still on your choice list.
  • You are flexible about which city you study in and willing to relocate if a better seat opens up.
  • Your top-choice campus — such as NIFT Mumbai or NIFT Delhi — did not come through in Round 1.
  • You want to remain in the process with your current seat as a fallback.

If your seat is upgraded in Round 2, your Round 1 seat is released and cannot be reclaimed. Float does not guarantee an upgrade — it only keeps you eligible for one.

When to Choose Slide After NIFT 2026 Round 1

Slide sits between Freeze and Float and is available only for B.Des students. Choose Slide if:

  • You are satisfied with your NIFT campus but a different B.Des programme at that same campus was ranked higher in your preference list.
  • For example, you got B.Des Fashion Design at NIFT Delhi but B.Des Knitwear Design at NIFT Delhi was a higher preference for you.
  • You do not want to risk being moved to a different city, which Float could cause.

Slide is not available for M.Des, M.F.M or M.F.Tech students. PG students can only choose Float or Freeze.

Can You Change Your NIFT 2026 Willingness Option After Submission?

Yes, but only in the direction of greater restriction. The permitted changes are:

  • Float to Slide (reduces scope to upgradation within same campus only)
  • Float to Freeze (locks in the seat entirely)
  • Slide to Freeze (locks in the seat entirely)

You cannot upgrade your willingness. Moving from Freeze to Slide or Float, or from Slide to Float, is not permitted once submitted. This means you should choose Float if you are even slightly open to a cross-campus upgrade — you can always downgrade to Freeze later, but you cannot go back to Float after choosing Freeze or Slide.

If you do not submit your willingness and pay the admission fee by July 1, 2026, your Round 1 allotted seat will be cancelled automatically.

NIFT 2026 Freeze Float Slide FAQs

Ques. What happens if I choose Float and no better seat is available in Round 2?

Ans. You retain your Round 1 allotted seat. Float only keeps you eligible for an upgrade — it does not remove your current seat. Your seat is safe even if no upgrade comes through in subsequent rounds.

Ques. Is Slide available for M.Des and M.F.M students in NIFT 2026?

Ans. No. Slide is available only for B.Des students. M.Des, M.F.M and M.F.Tech students can only choose between Freeze and Float.

Ques. Can I change from Freeze to Float after submitting my willingness?

Ans. No. You can only downgrade your willingness — from Float to Slide or Freeze, or from Slide to Freeze. Upgrading from Freeze to Float or from Slide to Float is not allowed once submitted.

Ques. What is the last date to submit willingness and pay fees for NIFT 2026 Round 1?

Ans. The deadline is July 1, 2026. Missing this date results in automatic cancellation of your Round 1 seat allotment.

Ques. If I choose Float and get upgraded in Round 2, can I go back to my Round 1 seat?

Ans. No. Once upgraded, your Round 1 seat is released and cannot be reclaimed. Choose Float only if you are genuinely willing to move to any of your higher-preference programme and campus options.

Ques. How do I submit my willingness option for NIFT 2026 Round 1?

Ans. Log in to nift.admissions.nic.in, navigate to the seat allotment section, select Freeze, Float or Slide as your willingness, and complete the admission fee payment before July 1, 2026.
