A new 2+2 Computer Science pathway has been established through a partnership between Chitkara University and York University in Canada. Students will study at Chitkara University for the first two years of their undergraduate degree and then transfer to York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering for the final two years. Upon meeting the required academic standards, they will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from York University.

This program aims to reduce some of the challenges Indian students face when choosing to study abroad. By completing the first two years in India, students can save on tuition and living costs while becoming familiar with Canadian academic methods. Credits earned at Chitkara University can be transferred to York University, subject to academic requirements.

Senior representatives from both institutions attended the signing ceremony at Chitkara University near Chandigarh, including Dr. Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University, and Dr Madhu Chitkara, Pro-Chancellor of Chitkara University. The partnership combines Chitkara University’s practical learning approach with York University’s research-based engineering education.

Programs Structure and Academic Framework

The program is aligned with international standards. During the first two years at Chitkara University, students build a foundation in mathematics, programming, algorithms, data structures and core computing subjects.

Students meeting the academic and language requirements will be eligible to transfer to York University for the final two years. There, they will study specialised areas such as artificial intelligence, software development, databases and computer systems. The program focuses on analytical thinking and problem-solving.

An important part of the program is the co-operative education semester, during which students can undertake paid internships with industry partners while continuing their studies.

The first student cohort is expected to join York University in September 2028. They will receive support in scholarships, accommodation and immigration guidance, along with information about Canada’s post-graduation work permit system and related career pathways.

Statements from University Leaders

Highlighting the focus on student readiness, Dr Madhu Chitkara said the program ensures preparation before students transition to Canada. She explained that students will receive guidance throughout the process, including assistance related to housing and immigration.

Dr Rhonda said that partnership supports York University’s international outlook. Students can begin their studies in India, build a strong academic base and complete their degree in Canada while gaining industry experience.

Benefits for Students and the Education Sector

The program offers financial advantages. Students can complete the first two years at domestic tuition rates in India before moving to Canada.

Graduates will earn a BSc degree from York University which is recognised internationally. The degree will provide access to Canada’s largest city and a major technology hub, along with academic facilities, career services and a multicultural environment.

To qualify, students must be enrolled in Chitkara University’s B.E. in Computer Science, maintain strong academic performance in mathematics and computing, and meet language requirements. Transfer to York university depends on meeting its academic standards.

Graduates can pursue careers in software development, data science, artificial intelligence and systems engineering, and may apply for post-study work opportunities in Canada, subject to immigration policies. The co-op component enhances employability through industry experience.

Broader Significance for India–Canada Education

This collaboration strengthens educational ties between India and Canada. It responds to growing demand for globally recognised Computer Science programs while ensuring structured academic support in India during the early years.
