Washington University Bachelor of Arts in Biology is a four-year, full-time degree taught in person at the Danforth Campus in St. Louis. Applicants need 12 years of schooling and a secondary diploma, while chemistry and physics are recommended. Fall 2027 tuition is unpublished; 2026-27 tuition was US$71,310 (INR 67.87 Lakhs), as a prior-cycle reference.

The degree trains students to test biological hypotheses across molecular, organismal and ecosystem levels through laboratory work, statistics and advanced electives. Its 58-unit science core suits applicants seeking research or pre-health preparation. However, the quantitative load makes it a poor fit for students seeking a lightly quantitative biology degree.

  • Students choose advanced courses across three biological areas, preserving breadth before specialising.
  • Up to six independent-research units can count toward the advanced biology requirement.
  • Senior honours provides a thesis route for students who meet the published major and overall grade thresholds.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the Fall 2027 intake are Open. International student Regular Decision deadline: 4 January 2027.

Indian applicants seeking non-binding consideration can use Regular Decision, while Early Decision applicants must accept the enrolment commitment. Scholarship supplements have an earlier priority deadline, so funding candidates should prepare them alongside the main application.

WashU BA Biology Fees and Living Costs 2027

Fall 2027 tuition remains unpublished after checks of WashU’s live cost and admissions surfaces. The table therefore uses 2026-27 figures only as prior-cycle planning references, not as a forecast.

All INR conversions in the article use a conversion rate of USD 1 = INR 95.18 as of 15 June 2026. Rates fluctuate daily, verify before applying.

The prior-cycle annual planning illustration totals US$100,848 (INR 95.99 Lakhs), calculated as tuition plus the two university estimates. It excludes travel and future increases, so families should not multiply it into a target-cycle commitment.

Cost of Living in St. Louis for Biology Students

WashU combines housing and food, while other estimated expenses remain a separate category. The monthly values below divide each official annual estimate by 12 and do not invent a rent or grocery split.

ExpenseMonthly (USD)Monthly (INR)Annual total
Housing and foodUS$2,022.67INR 1.93 LakhsUS$24,272 (INR 23.10 Lakhs)

Calculated totalUS$2,461.50INR 2.34 LakhsUS$29,538 (INR 28.11 Lakhs)

Because biology laboratories and research commitments can constrain working hours, applicants should secure funding without relying on campus earnings. Verify the target fee on the official fee page.

ROI reality: The prior-cycle annual estimate was nearly INR 1 Crore before travel, while Fall 2027 tuition is unpublished. Treat affordability as an admission-stage decision and preserve a contingency for annual increases.

WashU BA Biology Admission 2027

Fall is the only first-year intake, and applicants enter Arts & Sciences before declaring Biology during their second year. Admission is holistic, so WashU publishes preparation expectations rather than a minimum Indian percentage.

Academic Eligibility for Indian Applicants

Twelve years of primary and secondary education plus a school-leaving diploma or equivalent are required. Arts & Sciences recommends chemistry and physics for natural-science applicants because both subjects form part of the Biology major.

RequirementWashU expectationIndian applicant meaning
School qualificationSecondary diploma after 12 yearsCBSE, CISCE or recognised state-board Class 12 completion
Academic preparationFour years each of English and mathematics, with three to four years of laboratory scienceKeep Biology, Chemistry and Physics visible through Class 12 where available
Admission gradeNo minimum GPA or percentage publishedWashU evaluates the school record in its grading context
Major progressionC-minus or better in every counted Biology-major courseApproximately 55% to 59%, or CGPA 5.5 to 5.9 on 10, as a nonbinding Indian reference

The application requires transcripts, a grading-system description, examination results, a counselor recommendation and one teacher evaluation. The 250-word academic-interest response should connect Biology preparation to a specific research question or course area.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose second language is English must submit an approved test unless WashU grants an exemption. For Fall 2027, the university publishes competitive ranges rather than guaranteed admission cutoffs.

TestPublished competitive scoreFall 2027 condition
TOEFL after 21 January 20265.0 recommendedWashU uses the revised 1.0 to 6.0 scale
IELTS Academic7.0Accepted through the December 2026 test administration
Duolingo English Test130Accepted through the December 2026 test administration
  • Early Action and Early Decision I applicants must complete their final accepted English test by October 2026.
  • Regular Decision applicants must complete their final accepted English test by December 2026.
  • Three years in an English-medium United States programme may support a case-by-case waiver, but Indian English-medium schooling alone is not a published exemption.
Tip for Indian students: Strong laboratory-science preparation matters because the major includes chemistry, physics, calculus or statistics and advanced laboratory work. Use the academic-interest response to prove readiness for that breadth.

WashU BA Biology Application 2027

Four application plans are available for Fall 2027, but Early Decision I and II are binding. Early Action and Regular Decision preserve the ability to compare admission and funding offers.

Fall 2027 schedule: WashU publishes calendar dates without a portal cutoff time or timezone. Indian applicants should submit at least one Indian business day earlier rather than assume an IST conversion.

PlanApplication deadlineDecision releaseReply deadline
Early Action2 November 202623 December 20261 May 2027
Early Decision I2 November 202611 December 20264 January 2027
Early Decision II4 January 202712 February 20271 March 2027
Regular Decision4 January 20271 April 20271 May 2027

Scholarship applications are due 16 December 2026 for priority consideration across every plan. This timing means Early Decision II and Regular Decision candidates must finish scholarship essays before their admission applications are due.

  • Choose Early Action when Biology is a priority but comparing international aid packages remains necessary.
  • Choose Early Decision only after the prior-cycle cost and unpublished Fall 2027 tuition remain affordable without comparing offers.
  • Prepare transcripts, grading explanations and certified English translations before submitting through the Common Application or Coalition Application.
  • Budget the US$75 (INR 7,139) application fee unless financial aid or hardship qualifies you for WashU’s waiver.

The official Fall 2027 deadline schedule should control the final submission plan. Biology is selected as an academic interest, while formal major declaration occurs later.

Check Out: Washington University Profile

Application tip: The 16 December 2026 scholarship deadline precedes two admission deadlines. Complete the funding supplement first, then use the remaining time to refine the Biology-focused academic response.

WashU BA Biology Scholarships 2027

Danforth Scholars and Annika Rodriguez Scholars are the named merit routes relevant to Fall 2027 Biology applicants. Neither award is restricted to Biology, so selection evidence must extend beyond strong science grades.

Fall 2027 priority context: the shared scholarship application deadline is 16 December 2026. WashU’s current schedule does not assign a separate deadline to either programme.

ScholarshipSelection focusApplication action
Danforth Scholars ProgramLeadership, service and commitment to communityComplete the Signature Scholar supplement by 16 December 2026
Annika Rodriguez Scholars ProgramLeadership, service and contributions across diverse communitiesComplete the Signature Scholar supplement by 16 December 2026

Applicants should connect sustained science activity to measurable community impact rather than repeat the admission essay. A biology research project becomes stronger scholarship evidence when the response explains access, mentoring, public health or conservation outcomes.

  • Draft the scholarship supplement before December because the priority date applies even to January admission plans.
  • Use one sustained service example with responsibilities and results instead of listing unrelated school activities.
  • Keep a full-cost funding plan because award values and selection are not guaranteed for a Fall 2027 applicant.
Scholarship reality: Both named routes assess leadership and service beyond Biology achievement. Submit by 16 December 2026 and keep an independent funding plan until an award appears in writing.

WashU BA Biology Placements 2027

WashU does not publish a Biology BA salary or placement rate, so no graduate pay figure can support a payback claim. The strongest course-specific evidence concerns medical-school progression and research access.

Published Biology outcome scope: the department reports undergraduate pathways and medical-school applicant results, not a graduating-cohort employment survey. These figures describe access and progression rather than guaranteed outcomes.

EvidencePublished resultScope
Medical-school pathwayAbout two-thirds of Biology undergraduates attend medical schoolDepartment-level undergraduate statement
Medical-school acceptance72% of Biology majors who applied over six years were acceptedApplicants only, not all Biology graduates
Independent researchUp to 6 research units count toward advanced Biology requirementsCurriculum opportunity, not employment

Source: WashU Biology undergraduate programme and current Bulletin.

The official Biology undergraduate outcomes support a pre-health or research case, but they do not establish salary. Applicants targeting immediate industry work should investigate role requirements before accepting the cost.

Academic Value and Financial Tradeoff

This degree has an academic and research orientation, so its value depends on laboratory experience, mentoring and preparation for further study. A prior-cycle annual budget near INR 1 Crore makes unfunded graduate preparation financially consequential.

  • The 58-unit science requirement builds breadth, but applicants should map prerequisites against medical or graduate-school plans before enrolment.
  • Independent research can strengthen postgraduate applications, so identify laboratory interests before junior year rather than treating research as an optional final-year activity.
  • The 72% medical-school acceptance figure covers applicants, so use advising readiness and academic performance as decision inputs instead of assuming progression.
  • India-return value depends on the next credential or laboratory role, making postgraduate funding a more relevant test than an unsupported salary forecast.

Take-home pay would vary by role, location and tax status, but WashU publishes no Biology salary basis for a responsible estimate. Applicants should use an official tax calculator only after identifying a real job offer.

Honest take: The Biology BA supports research and medical-school preparation more clearly than direct salary recovery. Choose it when laboratory access and further study justify the high cost without relying on an unreported placement salary.

USA Visa for WashU BA Biology Students 2027

International students normally use the F-1 student visa and may seek OPT (Optional Practical Training) after graduation. OPT provides 12 months of work authorisation, while an eligible STEM-coded degree may add 24 months.

  • Confirm the Biology programme’s Classification of Instructional Programs code on the Form I-20 before treating the 24-month STEM extension as available.
  • An H-1B route may follow employer sponsorship, with the cached threshold stated as US$60,000 (INR 57.11 Lakhs), but selection and occupational wage rules still apply.
  • Employment-based permanent residence is possible, although no fixed settlement timeline follows automatically from the Biology degree or F-1 status.
  • An F-2 spouse may accompany the student, but the dependant’s work restrictions require a separate household funding plan.

Read More: USA Student Visa Requirements

Visa reality: The baseline post-study window is 12 months of OPT, while the additional 24 months depends on programme coding and employer compliance. Verify the Form I-20 code before using three years in an ROI plan.

WashU BA Biology Ranking 2027

Times Higher Education places WashU at joint 40th globally for Life Sciences in its 2026 subject ranking. This is a university subject-group result, not a ranking of the Biology BA curriculum.

2026 ranking context: the table preserves the publisher’s global and United States scopes. It should inform research-environment assessment rather than predict admission or graduate employment.

RankingPositionScope
Times Higher Education Life Sciences 2026Joint 40thGlobal universities in the Life Sciences subject group
Times Higher Education Life Sciences 2026Joint 19thUnited States institutions in the same subject table

The 2026 Life Sciences ranking table measures a broader field than this major. Compare its signal with the 58-unit curriculum, research-unit option and laboratory access.

Honest take: The joint 40th global Life Sciences position supports the research-environment case, but it does not rank this undergraduate degree. Curriculum fit and laboratory access should drive the final decision.

WashU’s Biology BA best fits students prepared for a broad science core, advanced laboratory work and research-led postgraduate planning. Its biological breadth and counted research units support pre-health or scientific training, while the unpublished Fall 2027 fee creates a material funding tradeoff. Applicants needing immediate salary certainty should prefer programmes with course-level employment data. Funding candidates should finish the scholarship supplement by 16 December 2026 before completing their chosen admission plan.

Washington University BA Biology FAQs

Ques. Is the WashU Biology BA suitable for pre-med students from India?

Ans. It can be suitable because the curriculum includes biology, chemistry, physics and quantitative study, while the department reports substantial medical-school progression. However, the BA does not itself guarantee admission or satisfy every medical school’s prerequisites. Map each required course against intended medical schools and budget for the next credential before enrolling.

Ques. How competitive is English testing for Fall 2027 Biology admission?

Ans. WashU recommends TOEFL 5.0 on the revised scale, IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 130 for competitive undergraduate applicants. These are published competitive ranges rather than admission guarantees. Early applicants must finish testing by October 2026, while later applicants have through December 2026.

Ques. What is the realistic annual cost before Fall 2027 tuition is published?

Ans. The 2026-27 planning illustration combines US$71,310 tuition with US$29,538 estimated living expenses, producing US$100,848 (INR 95.99 Lakhs). That prior-cycle total excludes travel and future increases. Use it only to test affordability, then replace tuition with the Fall 2027 figure when WashU publishes it.

Ques. Should a Biology applicant choose Early Action or Early Decision?

Ans. Early Action is safer when an international applicant needs to compare costs because it is non-binding. Early Decision can suit applicants whose family can accept an unpublished target fee without comparing offers. Both November plans require submission by 2 November 2026, while scholarship materials remain due 16 December 2026.

Ques. Does the Biology BA provide three years of post-study work?

Ans. F-1 graduates receive a 12-month OPT baseline when approved. A further 24-month extension depends on the degree’s STEM code and a qualifying employer, so three years should not be assumed from the course title. Confirm the Form I-20 code before relying on the extension for funding or career planning.

It was the best value because I got a full scholarship/highest rank. Also when I visited I could imagine a high quality of life for myself due to the beautiful dorms and yummy food. It was big enough that I could meet new people every day if I wanted to but not big enough that I would feel lost.
