The Master of Science degree in Mining and Earth Systems Engineering has two options available. Master of Science - Thesis and Master of Science - Non-Thesis. Thesis Option requires a minimum of 21 semester credit hours of course work and 9 semester credits of research, approved by student’s graduate committee, plus a master’s thesis. The Master of Science - Non-Thesis option must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work of which 6 credit hours may be applied towards the analytical report writing, if required.

The Master of Engineering degree (Engineer of Mines) in Mining Engineering includes all the requirements for the M.S. degree, with the sole exception that an “engineering ­report” is required rather than a Master’s Thesis.

All applicants must submit:

  • Bachelor’s Degree: A bachelor's degree is required for admission.
  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination): GRE scores are not required for admission. However, they may be submitted as additional supporting materials if desired.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required for the application. Current Mines students may not need to provide letters of recommendation.
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV): A resume or CV is required as part of the application.
  • Statement of Purpose: You must submit a statement of purpose, outlining your reasons for pursuing the program.
  • Transcript(s): Transcripts from all schools attended are required. Unofficial transcripts are accepted for admissions review, but they must show successful completion of any required prerequisite course(s).
  • Supporting Materials: Up to two additional supporting materials, such as project reports, published papers, GRE scores, etc., may be submitted with the application. These materials are optional.
