What Students Say
Likes
- Course work designed by engineers from the industry
- Lab equipment upto industry standards
- Career fairs
Dislikes
- Extremely remote location makes it hard for anyone to travel to nearest big cities
- Harsh weather conditions
- Not suitable for computer science engineering
Course Curriculum
- Difficulty level is indeterminate, with some really basic courses and some highly advanced courses.
- Hands-on experience is the crucial and deciding part when it comes to selecting a subject, and Michigan tech offers many courses with structure like this.
- Typically, 2 or 3 classes are scheduled for 3 or 4 days a week.
- Very few Indian students in this university; most opt out due to the remote location and harsh climate.
Admission Experience
-
The 3 universities which I applied to are:
- Michigan Technological University
- Kent State University
- Oakland State University
- Lawrence tech
- I received admission from Michigan Technological University and Lawrence tech.
- Application was incomplete at Oakland State University and Kent State University. I did not receive any rejection from any university.
- I chose these because I had less time to decide since my plans changed. Highly focused on control systems engineering.
- Application requires a student to submit a statement of purpose, a personal statement and 3 letters of recommendation
- No requirement of GRE or GMAT when I applied. IELTS cut off around 6.5
- Admission was pretty smooth and communication from the university was clear in each step.
- Admission process might vary now since the requirements now need the students to have a gre score; I'm not exactly sure if that is still a requirement. Fall 2022.
- Admission process took 3 months from the date of application till the i20 was received.
- Fall semester in general in the United States offers courses in an increase order of difficulty and skills required.
- For example, a student can enrol in a basic-to-intermediate course in fall and then take up an advanced-level course in the following spring semester, which could potentially check all the requirements as well.
Faculty
- Not quite sure about the ratio since it depends on the course.
- Teaching is okayish but labs are the place where we learnt the most.
- Faculty with real industry experience is what students like the most.
- Yes, a few faculty members assist students by referring them to known organisations and recruit students as research assistants when the student needs it the most.
Campus Life
- We only have one campus and a few buildings located around it, all within a 2-mile radius.
- All facilities and available and due to the lower number of Indian students, fewer activities are conducted for Indians.
- But overall, a good number of activities happen around which are hard to find sometimes due to high academic work and a lower number of indian students to assist in case of newer events.
Part Time Jobs
- Mostly 50 to 60 per cent of the students receive a TA or RA position.
- Pay range is around 12 to 18 dollars an hour and a maximum of 20 hours a week for a full-time enrolled student.
- It's quite easy to secure an on-campus job.
- Students can work as an RA, TA, in dining services, as a proctor, or as a bartender at events; organise events; or work as a computer technician.

- Students can apply on the spot and then receive links to apply online.
Accommodation
- Accommodation is simpler compared to other universities.
- Everyone gets to apply for on-campus housing and 95 per cent of students will receive housing on campus.
- Student housing is 0.5 miles from the campus. Monthly rent is around 400 per student in a 2br apartment.
- Off-campus housing is easier to find as well since not many students live around and it's a small university town.
Exams
- IELTS, 3 LOR’s
- Statement of purpose, Personal statement, No interview.
- No gre requirement when I enrolled; however, it could now very well have changed.
- No interview is required for an admission to a master's degree; however, one could be necessary for student to enroll in a PhD programme.
- The process of admission could now vary a lot since the laws have changed remarkably and the funding to the schools has changed too.
Fees
- 1500 usd per credit. 30 credits minimum for a master's degree. Each semester requires a student to take 9 credits to be eligible as a full-time student.
- If the student is on cpt, then they can enrol in less than 9 credits that semester since cpt enrollment is considered as a full-time student.
- But a student is eligible for cpt only after 2 completed semesters.
Scholarship
- No scholarships received.
- Yet there are rare cases where scholarships are possible. This must be discussed with the management.
- But at Michigan Technological University, it is quite rare to receive a sponsorship, but there still are possibilities.
- If a student receives a scholarship in the form of a fee waiver, they would receive 2 credits off when they work in specific departments as a student grader.
