What Students Say
Likes
- Flexible with online classes, we can just visit twice per semester.
- Easy assignments as they are mostly theory and can be found online resources easily.
- Low fee compared to other universities and since it is in Texas even the cost of living is less
Dislikes
- Not many specializations included for MS. If we have completed our bachelor’s in engineering, then we only have one/two options.
- The standard of syllabus and faculty experience is not as per current requirements.
- Less chances of working as assistant professors as they are limited branches. May be one or two posts and that too professors are very biased in selecting as they are done on merit or performance matrix.
Course Curriculum
- The course curriculum was very easy. Even the engineering first year person could easily understand and complete the assignments. Positive is if you are from the core engineering background like electrical or electronics then it will be easy to understand as everything is basic.
- The negative aspects is it’s not advanced so it would be helpful in cracking interviews or while at work. We had a total strength of 22 students out of which only 3 were American and that too they enrolled in few optional electives and the majority 96% are only from India.
Admission Experience
-
University of Texas at Arlington- admitted
University of North Texas - admitted
University of Mary Hardin Baylor - admitted - In all the three universities I applied, I got admissions. It might be because of job experience, good ielts score and academics.
- I have not applied for many of the universities as it has application fee and bigger process.
- I was looking for Texas region, so I just filtered out few universities and applied
- I have chosen this university due to flexibility of online classes and one of my friend graduated from the same university (umhb) since I have already completed my masters in India, I thought it would be best as it’s online and low fee. In 2023, I have submitted only ILETS score and I have 7.5 points out of 10. But for this university we just need minimum of 6 points. The admission process was easy to apply online and within 20 days I got my I20 issued
- I took it for spring 2023, as the rate of approval Will be more and I had few of my friends coming for the same intake. I had applied in mid August and got the result or acceptance in first week of September. Then I had few steps and paper work to be done before visa interview. My visa got approved on Nov end and in mid December I moved to US.
- It was very simple and straightforward process. The DSO of the university is very supportive and answers to our emails very quickly
Faculty
- We just had 4-5 faculty covering all the courses. They are experienced but they won’t cover any advanced topics. It just a 45 min class with presentations. Then they might discuss regarding the assignment modules. They don’t assist in career fairs or through their personal networks for references. My favorite professor is James King, because he atleast steps forward in helping international students in getting assistant professors jobs
Campus Life
- It is a huge campus with 4-5 sub campuses. We have the golf club, foot ball grounds, libraries and stadium as well. Our university is famous for medical back ground. We do have in house medical or emergency first aid care.
- Apart from this we have feats like food festival, Patrick’s day celebration, and also the foot ball and basket ball tournaments from my university and Austin universities. We were not exposed to much clubs as it was maintained by under grad students
Part Time Jobs
- If we secure any position of teaching assistant, research assistant or departmental assistant then for my university we get the half of the semester fee waiver and around 300$ monthly . For other part time jobs on campus it will be 15-16$ hour pay and the maximum hours will be 20 for a week for international students. It will be easy when will apply during spring or have referrals
- It’s illegal to work outside of campus being on F1 visa. But few people still choose to work outside but I don’t suggest as it’s very risky and not illegal. We can apply for in campus part time jobs where we can work up to 20 hours per week. There are multiple options in campus like dining area, star bucks, sub ways and many other options. At the beginning or about to start of each semester we can apply in online in college portals
Placement
- There is only very less percentage of students who grabs employment within 6 months due to recession and it might be due to less experience as now a days many of the companies are expecting 3-5 years of experience as minimum. So I would say may be 10-15% may secure the jobs within 6 months.
- Average salary would be around 70-90k$ per annum depending upon location. The main channels for job will be networking, referrals from seniors, and through linked in . None of my friends have secured the job yet. So can’t comment on thier experience. The companies like EY, Toshiba , Pwc , and all major IT firms like infosys, tcs, hcl has good opportunities for business analysts.
Accommodation
-
I found accommodation through my seniors. And there are many platforms and Facebook groups where we can look for. There are telegram groups as well. My monthly rent was 350$ with four people including me .
-
The challenges weren’t much in accommodation as I was referred by my friend . But the community which we were in was bad at responding to our requests. It was near by to college. It was 15 miles away. It has the Indian communities near by so many of the students in those apartments.
Exams
- I submitted only the IELTS score and also with statement of purpose, degree certificate, CV, work experience letter, four letter of recommendations from university and work place. I think these are basic and I haven’t submitted any other documents apart from them. There was no interview. To me, any one with basic bachelor degree not necessarily from engineering can also secure seat in my university. I had few classmates who did pharmacy and yet they have secured the admission into MSIS
Fees
-
I had $27,000 dollars for the whole MSIS course, I haven’t stayed in dorms, so no idea of it. It can be paid monthly or semester wise. We get a credit of $1000 twice when we get 4/4 cgpa. Apart from this they sometimes charge 250$ as transportation and we can talk to authorities and get it removed as we don’t use it.
-
I had 700-800$ dollars as monthly expenses. We shared the 2bedroom flat by 4 people and since all the groceries were shared by everyone we had split wise.
Scholarship
- There is no scholarship for immigrants. For those who worked in US military there is a fee waiver. Regarding the scholarship we get a 2000$ for everyone who secure 4/4 cgpa. None of my friends nor classmates has received financial aid.
- I have received the scholarship just as many of them receive for securing 4/4cgpa. There is no particular name for this. We can either transfer this amount to bank account or get the reduced amount for next semester
