What Students Say
Likes
- Diversity in University. University claims to be one of the diverse universities in the States which I think is one as the nationality of students exceeds from more than 40 countries which makes it one of the good place for international students.
- The Staffs and Professors. Until now my interaction with the staffs and professors have been very nice. Professors are really helpful and helps you understand anything you have problem with very easily and also the staffs working here are super kind and are always ready to provide you with a helping hand when you need one.
- Clubs By far this university has the highest number of clubs ranging from simple club for student to hang out and chill to club that helps student develop and learn new skills that can align with your major. The number of clubs on campus helps you constantly get involved in different activities constantly while helping you learn different new things as well.
Dislikes
- The facility for train station. The university lies on Glassboro which is a small town rather than some big city due to which the facility of nearest train station is almost 17km from university.
- Cost for on campus housing and dining. The cost of housing on campus is really expensive as the cheapest one being around 4800$ for a single semester and also the dining meal plans comes to around 2450$ for the cheapest one and you are only able to have 2 meals daily.
- The policy for students to leave off campus University holds a strong policy for any students under 21 to stay on campus housing and one can leave only if they have someone of their family member staying inside 40mile (64km) radius which applies for both international students as well as students for the US as well.
Course Curriculum
- Since I'm a CS student most of the courses related to it are almost more practical apart from any courses related to math.
- I would say that most of the assignments are related to coding and doing math's which are 2 things I really love and have interest for.
- I do hate the fact it would take more time for me to complete my day-to-day assignments compared to my roommate who usually had an assignment throughout the week.
- There are 4-5 Indian students enrolled in each of my 5 classes and about 70-100 students enrolled for the course .
Admission Experience
- Although I looked at multiple choices like University of Virginia, Southside Virginia I applied for a single college here in USA which was totally due to constant pressure from my aunt who lives here always wanting for me to continue my education in USA, due to which I chose the one which looked affordable and closest to her place. The university also had good student graduation rate which also was a major factor.
- I never completed my application process for other universities than Rowan as I had already set my mind on a single one and did it just to make my aunt happy. The admission process was super easy you just have to complete the application and pay a fee of 100$ refundable fee if you join the university.
- I only had done my IELTS as I had very good grades on my physics, biology, chemistry and math in High School and didn't feel like putting much more effort on another examination right after my High School finals. Although my grades were good for English, I completed IELTS just so I could check out the box on the English test I have completed where I received 7.5. The overall admission experience was good went really smoothly for me the mails were responded earlier than other institution as told by my friends.
- I applied for fall intake and as it would be the closest intake I could apply for right after receiving my high school graduation certificate. I started applying during early November after getting my acceptance letter I than proceeded to apply for VISA interview which was after 4 months during which time I completed my placement tests and started preparing for my interview and on April I was done with my interview and came to US at around 5th of August.
Faculty
- I'm not sure about the faculty to student ratio but the classes are usually not fully packed which signifies that there is good amount of teacher according to need of students.
- The teachers help students learn in a job-oriented manner and helps student understand what is required to land a job successfully.
- The faculty member has not yet helped me find any part time job on campus but according to other students it is really common for them to help you land a job on campus.
- My calculus-I teacher Edward Reimers is one I liked the most as he helped the class learn the subject very easily, creating a friendly environment and bringing out really good and funny videos related to course which made class really enjoyable.
Campus Life
- There are three campuses of Rowan with all of them being inside New Jersey.
- Each of the three campuses being in Glassboro, Stratford and Camden. There is a REC center that has most indoor sports courts inside and also has a good gym, a library that contains almost all the books you need and also provides you access to all the newspapers and magazines published online and a wellness center that provides you with medical assistance both physically and mentally.
- There are a lot of grounds and courts for students to play on providing you with lots of different option of sports to play.
- The campus also hosts different cultural events for almost all of the major festivals of every religion which is also supported by student organization committee with respect to the following group of people. And almost all group of people have a separate student organization registered in university.
Part Time Jobs
- Few students do secure TA, RA and DA during their time at campus. A job known as peer tutor usually opens up for almost all subjects which is equivalent to TA and people can secure it really easy if they have good grades on those subjects. Though RA and DA usually opens up for students it is not as common as TA.
- The pay range of all the jobs on campus starts from $15.55 and goes anywhere up to $25 per hour according to job criteria. You can work on almost every department of the campus as well as other jobs on admissions, REC center and IRT department opens up once per semester. Students can work up to 20 hours per week and the process of job hunt is a bit harder as almost everyone on campus are searching for job while the required slots are very low.
- Students earn as low as $15.5 per hour if they manage to secure a job and can go up to $25 based on the qualification required to do the job. While getting a job could be very difficult for students job search is not that bad because of campus posting almost most of the jobs in their website where you can complete the form over there and then you will be called for an interview if the application of the student becomes satisfactory to the person hiring then an interview takes place after which you will be informed if you got a job or not within a week.
- If it's you first job then you will be provided with required documents from university to go to the local administration office where you can apply for SSN and once you receive SSN you will be able to work on campus. And if it's not you first time getting a job on campus you will already have a valid SSN at this point and you can just go to internal center in university and complete the form that requires you to submit the information of you job and your hirer.
Placement
- Around 20% of students secure an employment within the first 6 months of graduation for computer science due to its high number of people searching for a job and low number of job openings.
- Someone wanting to work on a job right after graduation must put a lot of effort in finding an internship during their studies where they can develop skills and would be considered a good candidate by different organization for a job. If a student manages to secure a job position after graduation the minimum salary a CS student earns can be $100000 and can range anywhere up to $200000 on their first year.
- Job openings can be found on companies' sites almost every time and you must be constantly looking for the to get one and also university hold multiple career fair throughout the semester where you can talk and connect with big tech companies' recruiter and know more about the upcoming job opportunities.
- According to one of the TA that helped my Object-Oriented teacher who also worked as a network engineer in Verizon he said, "Securing a job is not all about your grades you have to work on your projects develop other skills apart from what you are taught.
- I did not have that good of a GPA, but I loved working on creating new projects and taught myself with new things on regular basic which worked at the end as I was approached by Verizon and works there as a network engineer intern.
- " Major companies like Verizon, Twitch, Riot, Amazon and Microsoft hires students from the university but you do have to work hard from your time as a student to even get close to securing a job at these companies.
Accommodation
- As a first-year student you are required to stay on campus unless you have someone you know living under a 40mile radius. So, there was not so much of a challenge to find one as everything was listed out on universities website.
- The housing however wasn't cheap as it cost you around $4800 per semester which doesn't include your food which you have to pay at least $2450 for a single semester and most of the first-year Indian students live on campus because of rule implemented by university
Exams
- University asks only for an English proficiency test to determine whether you are good at English or not which can be any of the tests and most of the things can be carried out with your academics if you managed to score good during you High School examination. Else a good score of SAT is needed for getting scholarships and getting accepted in the university.
- The university doesn't itself asks for any of the extra documents for the application process other than your high school marksheet but after accepting your offer letter you are than obligated to submit bank balance certificate. And no extra interview process takes place from university side for your application process, but a placement test is required to determine if you will be needing extra courses or not.
Fees
- All the international students are considered as a full-time student and are charged based on semester where you can take 17 credits per semester and in comes to total amount of 25600$ just for tuition fee per year excluding their hidden fees that comes at around 700$ per semester.
- Additionally, I paid 4800$ for housing and 2650$ for food per semester.
Scholarship
- I received $19000 on scholarship for a year which managed to take my tuition fee from $25600 to $3300 per semester including international student scholarship of $11000 per year and Browns and Golds scholarship of $8000 per year which is given to students based on their academic performance with $8000 being the most.
- My batchmates also received same amount of international student scholarships but the scholarship for Browns and Golds varied among different batchmates.
