Colleges Where I Was Accepted
Reason for choosing my college
NAU had one of the best programs for hospitality and ranked 7th in the world at the time. Also, Flagstaff is such a beautiful mountain town so I had a great experience overall.
Colleges Where I Was Rejected
Reason for Rejection
I did not apply to a whole bunch of colleges, and I applied through an agency here In India. So I got into two colleges, one of which was Humber University, and the other one was NAU.

Tips to enhance your application
I had all my documents and files ready, like your bank statements and funds proving that you can pay for Tution, all my report cards and Sevis documents etc
Admission Experience
I have always wanted to go to the US, and this was my pass to get there. NAU had an amazing program designed for hospitality and had great resources and mentorship. Also, living in a small mountain town coming from a big city like Mumbai was a huge shift. I learned a lot during my time at college.
Class Schedule
- I had about 2-3 classes a day, 5 days a week, depending on the semester. I could fit my classes sometimes into a 4-day schedule.
- Each class was roughly about 40 mins and we had assignments due at midnight for most of them. So roughly about 25 hrs on average including assignments per week.
Faculty
- One of the best faculty I had was Ms Hospadka, who retired.
- Chef Mark Molinaro, who had excellent mentorship and teaching techniques. Chef Mark was a little strict but made sure we were always learning something while we were in his class and also made it super fun.
Campus Life
NAU has two campuses, Flagstaff and Phoenix. Speaking of the Flagstaff campus there was always some event going on and the campus was well connected based on transport facilities and resources were easily accessible like a library, health centre, gym, pool, post office etc
Part Time Jobs
- Most Indian students would prefer working at Sodexo because it paid comparatively higher and had some benefits for the employees as well. It would be $12 while the rest were paying minimum wage, which was $8 (2019) for on-campus jobs posted on Handshake.
- Finding a job was hard due to the volume of students. I used Handshake to land my first job in 2019 which paid me $8/hr.
- You do get TA, and RA positions as well but it is hard to get.
- Usual work week would be 20 hrs.
Placement
- Landing a full-time job is hard unless you’re exceptionally skilled.
- I moved back to India, but I did secure a job for the 1 year I had. I got an opportunity at Amangiri, and they were paying me $26/hr, but I did not go due to the location and chose to continue my employment full-time as a supervisor at Sodexo.
Accommodation
Finding a place to stay near campus that is on a budget is hard. I didn’t like sharing my room, so I wanted a private space. I used Facebook groups like Flagstaff Housing and NAU housing on/off campus to find housing off campus because it was cheaper and bigger size apartments than campus dorms.
