What Students Say
Likes
- To a student who is willing to look for resources to grow in life, Syracuse University is an excellent college to choose.
- The infrastructure is great, and the college environment is designed to aid students in achieving their career goals.
- The university also has facilities like the Barnes Health Center that focus on student's mental and physical health.
Dislikes
- I dislike the climatic conditions in Syracuse. Especially, the harsh winters. Sometimes, the housing is way far from University which makes it difficult to travel.
- With the increase in intake, University is finding it hard to provide employment to all the students.
I chose this university because the university excels in providing a quality student experience. It also had professors with incredible backgrounds and experience. The infrastructure and maintenance helped me believe in the university's seriousness in delivering a healthy environment to students. On top of all that, the university provided me with a huge scholarship that aided my financial constraints.
Course Curriculum
The university tries its best in updating the course every semester, but I do believe that there is a lot of room for improvement. In Business Analytics, a new course: Machine Learning for Business was introduced that helped students in utilizing modern Machine Learning concepts and Generative AI to solve business problems. Lean Six Sigma, an experiential course at SU, allowed me to work at Upstate Medical University and solve real-world problems using lean methodology. Therefore, thoroughly go through coursework before you enrol into a course.
Faculty
The faculty-to-student ratio varies according to the course you are enrolled on. Every program has a few mandatory courses. These mandatory courses will have at least 200 students for 1 faculty. However, the faculty makes sure every student participates in the discussion. If you pay attention and actively participate in the class, rest assured, your name will be remembered by them. For most courses, the faculty-to-student ratio is 1:30. The faculty at SU is the faculty you can count on. My faculty weren't just amazing professors but also incredible mentors. Every professor at Whitman School of Management strives to deliver an impactful learning experience. For instance, I remember times when I applied the learnings from class in the real world and saved a few hundred bucks when I went shopping. In another instance, with the skills I have learnt in courses, I was successful in solving re-schedule issues at Upstate Medical Hospital within few months! The relationship with faculty doesn't just end when you graduate. Professors keep in touch with you and help you in improving your network to find your job. Blindly trust your faculty and continue to work hard to achieve your goals.
Campus Life
SU allowed me to embrace my student life all over, once again. From weekend hiking to midnight events called Orange After Dark, from rock climbing to sustainability clubs, I got to fulfill many activities on my bucket list as a student. The university has a club for book readers, sustainability, coders, dancers and many more. Don't like any of these? You have a chance to create your own club! SU makes it all easy for creative students. The campus has a silent library and an active library. The entire campus has a high-speed wifi facility. It also has various sports grounds both indoor and outdoor. I am pretty sure SU has so much to uncover in a span of 2 years.
Placement
The placements abroad don't really work like in India. You are responsible for getting a job in the US. The university provides you with resources like Career Fairs, and Career Advisors that give you an exposure to the hiring process and their expectations. There are Entrepreneur Hubs to bring your business ideas into action as well. With all this provided, it is the student's responsibility to fill in as many applications possible and ensure the jobs align with their purpose.
Accommodation
There are rental agencies like SQL, University Hill Apartments, Orange Housing etc., that can help you find your new home. If you are to sign a lease, you shall pay a deposit that costs around $450-$600. Anything above that is overpriced. The rent also varies from $350-$600 per room, including/ excluding utilities like electricity, gas, water and wifi. Each room is for one individual. If you are willing to share, you must have the landlord's written consent. Most of the houses are located near bus stops. The transportation is free if the student's one of the destinations is university. Otherwise, Centro will charge you just 1$ per ride.
Exams
- In 2021, the university required an average IELTS score of 6.5, GRE was not mandatory. The updated information will be on Syracuse University's official website. - State - 9.8/10 (10th); State - 963/1000 (12th); Andhra University - 9.0/10 (UG- Chemical Engineering) - Requirements: In order to apply for SU, it is mandatory for every applicant to submit their SoP, LoR and Resume. I submitted one SoP, 3 LoRs and an updated CV that aligns with my interest in Business Analysis. The SoP shall convey a story. A story of who you are, what is your purpose and how will you fulfil your purpose with the help of this University. Research the university and its professors on the university website and describe how it would help you in achieving your goal. For the Business Analytics course, I had to submit a short video answering the questions mentioned. This is part of the application process.
Fees
I have received the Dean's Graduate Scholarship which waived 75% of my tuition fees. However, the fee per credit is 1800$. Depending on your program, the minimum number of credits varies. For Business Analytics, the minimum number of credits is 36 to be awarded a master's degree.
