What Students Say

- The scholarship was the biggest reason I chose to attend. I was also accepted into the Honors College at UMD and I loved my experience! The people were incredibly bright and kind. We had the program directors who mentored us and helped us find internships and volunteer opportunities.
Required Exams for Admission
I really enjoyed UMD! It is a large school with abundant opportunities for its students. The students I met are bright and accomplished, and the faculty are committed to your success. Maryland is also conveniently located, with DC not far away and many big companies nearby that hire grads.
Course Curriculum
I think the curriculum is very professor-dependent, so it is important to read professor reviews before signing up for classes. For most of my classes, the syllabi felt updated and relevant to current scientific discoveries. Yes, I was given some research experience through an on-campus internship I found myself, and through some laboratory classes.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is 1:18, so it is a larger school. Nearly all of the faculty and staff I met were approachable and welcoming. Faculty in the Honors College were particularly helpful in mentoring me.
Campus Life
UMD is a huge school with a lot of facilities! WiFi is available everywhere on campus. We have multiple gyms, libraries, and research facilities in all corners of the campus. UMD is quite social, as there are many people involved in fraternities (although I never joined any). There are a variety of clubs, whether they are social or service-oriented or hobby-based. Research is abundant, as many professors have their own labs on campus.
Placement
Our school hosts multiple career fairs throughout the year. I know for tech jobs, there are many companies that visit, such as Capital One, Google, Amazon, etc. I personally know many friends that got into those companies. Salaries for those are all $100k+. I myself am pre-med, so I will be doing science research post-grad, for much lower salary. But there are abundant research opportunities since Maryland is located near the National Institutes of Health, Food & Drug Administration, which hires many.
Accommodation
I lived on campus all 4 years. The first year, I shared a room with someone. In the latter 3 years, I was in a 4 bed/2bath. My scholarship covered everything. The first room is about $5000 a semester. The second one is 1000/month.
Exams
My score: SAT 1580/1600. However, standardized testing is optional currently. For international students, you will have to take English proficiency exam, such as TOEFL with a minimum of 95. The common application I used requires letters of recommendation and your activities list. I recommend picking teachers who know you well and who can speak to your academic achievements or potential. Yes, I had an interview for the merit scholarship. I believe for non-scholarship candidates, interviews are not required. My suggestion is to be authentic and polite. The interview was relaxed, with 2 professors asking about my application and why I wanted to come to this school. So be ready with school-specific questions!
Fees
$20,153.00 per semester for out-of-state/international students.
Scholarship
Banneker/Key scholarship (full ride) at my university, no extra requirements beyond what is required for the overall school.
