JU Ph.D. (Life and Allied Health Science) FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the Biotechnology track and the Allied Health Sciences / Physiotherapy track under Ph.D. (Life and Allied Health Science) at Joy University?
Ans. The Ph.D. (Life and Allied Health Science) at Joy University's SOLHS covers two broad research tracks. The Biotechnology track focuses on molecular biology, genetic engineering, bioprocess technology, and related biomedical research areas. The Allied Health Sciences track covers clinical research in areas such as Operation Theatre Technology, Cardiac Perfusion, Medical Radiology, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Physician Assistant studies. The Physiotherapy track (under the Department of Physiotherapy) focuses on musculoskeletal rehabilitation, neurological physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy, and related clinical research. The annual tuition fee also differs: Rs. 50,000 per year for Biotechnology / Allied Health Sciences and Rs. 65,000 per year for Physiotherapy (Part Time External).
Ques. Can a healthcare professional working in a hospital pursue this Part Time Ph.D. without relocating to Tirunelveli?
Ans. Yes. The Part Time Ph.D. at Joy University is specifically designed for working professionals. External Part Time scholars do not have a mandatory residency requirement on campus. With the approval of their Supervisor and Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC), they can opt for video-based and self-study coursework. However, physical presence may be required for DAC meetings, progress seminars, laboratory work (if applicable to the research), and the final viva-voce examination. Candidates must be associated with a recognised healthcare institution or research organisation to qualify as an External Part Time scholar.
Ques. Is CSIR NET or UGC NET mandatory for admission to Ph.D. (Life and Allied Health Science) at Joy University?
Ans. No, CSIR NET or UGC NET is not mandatory for admission. Joy University conducts its own entrance test, JOYET, which is the primary basis for admission. However, candidates who have qualified CSIR NET (JRF) or UGC NET (JRF) may be eligible for JRF fellowships from CSIR or UGC, which provide a monthly stipend (currently Rs. 37,000 per month for JRF and Rs. 42,000 per month for SRF as per UGC norms). Since Joy University does not pay stipends to Part Time scholars, qualifying for an external fellowship can significantly offset the cost of the programme.
Ques. What are the research areas available under Ph.D. (Life and Allied Health Science) at Joy University?
Ans. The SOLHS at Joy University supports research in Biotechnology (molecular biology, genetic engineering, bioprocess technology, bioinformatics, and related areas), Allied Health Sciences (clinical research in operation theatre technology, cardiac perfusion, medical radiology, medical laboratory technology, and physician assistant studies), and Physiotherapy (musculoskeletal rehabilitation, neurological physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy, cardiopulmonary physiotherapy, and community rehabilitation). Candidates are encouraged to contact the faculty members listed on the SOLHS page (joyuniversity.edu.in) before applying to identify a suitable supervisor and research area.
Ques. How many publications are required before thesis submission, and what journals are acceptable?
Ans. Joy University mandates a minimum of two Scopus-indexed publications (accepted or published) before a scholar can submit the doctoral thesis. At least one of these must be in a journal. The Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) and the respective department define the acceptable stature of journals and conferences. For life and health sciences, journals indexed in PubMed, Scopus, or Web of Science are generally considered acceptable. Scholars are strongly advised to plan their publications early, ideally by the end of the second year, to avoid delays in thesis submission.
Ques. What is the total cost of the Ph.D. (Life and Allied Health Science) Part Time programme at Joy University, and are there any hidden charges?
Ans. For the Biotechnology / Allied Health Sciences track, the total cost for the minimum 3-year duration (External Part Time) is Rs. 2,14,500, which includes Application Fee (Rs. 1,500), Registration Fee (Rs. 15,000), Tuition for 3 years (Rs. 1,50,000), Synopsis Submission Fee (Rs. 10,000), Thesis Submission Fee (Rs. 28,000), and Viva-Voce Fee (Rs. 10,000). For the Physiotherapy track, the total is Rs. 2,59,500 for 3 years. Additional charges may apply for Course Work Examination (Rs. 1,000 per paper), Change of Supervisor (Rs. 7,000), and extensions beyond 5 years. There are no hidden charges beyond these officially published fee components.
