PPU M.Com FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between M.Com at PPU's main campus department and at affiliated colleges? Which is better?
Ans. Patliputra University offers M.Com both at its own Post Graduate Department on the PPU campus in Patna and at Post Graduate Centres in select constituent colleges. The PPU campus department generally offers more direct access to university faculty, library resources, and administrative support. Affiliated college PG centres may vary in quality of teaching and infrastructure. When applying, you can select your preferred college/department on the portal. Students who want a more structured PG environment are advised to opt for the PPU campus department if seats are available, as it tends to have more consistent class schedules.
Ques. Is the M.Com admission at PPU purely merit-based or is there any entrance test?
Ans. For the regular M.Com programme at Patliputra University, admission is entirely merit-based on graduation marks. There is no entrance examination. The merit list is prepared based on marks obtained in the Honours/Major subject (for Honours graduates) or Subsidiary/Pass course marks (for Pass course graduates). Candidates with Honours degrees are given preference over Pass course graduates in the merit list. This means your B.Com percentage directly determines your chances of getting admission to your preferred college/department.
Ques. I completed my B.Com from a different university. Can I apply for M.Com at PPU? Are there any additional requirements?
Ans. Yes, students who have completed their B.Com from any recognised university can apply for M.Com at Patliputra University. However, students graduating from universities other than Patliputra University are required to complete a separate Registration process after admission, which involves submitting a Migration Certificate from their previous university and paying a registration fee of Rs. 461. This registration is mandatory and must be completed within the stipulated dates announced by the university. Failure to register can result in cancellation of admission.
Ques. What career options are available after M.Com from Patliputra University?
Ans. An M.Com from Patliputra University opens several career avenues. Graduates can appear for UGC NET/JRF in Commerce to pursue a career in teaching or research (lectureship/assistant professorship). The degree also qualifies candidates for government jobs through BPSC (Bihar Public Service Commission) and SSC exams in accounting and finance roles. In the private sector, M.Com graduates can work as senior accountants, financial analysts, tax consultants, or auditors. Many students also use M.Com as a stepping stone to pursue CA (IPCC/Final), CMA, or MBA. The advanced subjects like Corporate Tax Planning, Security Analysis, and Research Methodology covered in the PPU M.Com curriculum are particularly useful for these paths.
Ques. How is the fee structure for M.Com at PPU so low? Are there any additional charges I should know about?
Ans. The official university-prescribed fee for M.Com at PPU is Rs. 5,120 for the full 2-year course (Rs. 2,560 per semester), which is indeed very low compared to private institutions. This is because PPU is a state government university and fees are regulated by the Bihar government. However, individual affiliated colleges may levy additional charges such as library fees, development fees, or college-level charges over and above the university fee. The application fee of Rs. 800 (General) or Rs. 600 (SC/ST) is separate and non-refundable. Students should confirm the complete fee structure with their allotted college at the time of admission to avoid surprises.
Ques. What is the UGC NET eligibility after M.Com from PPU? Can I directly apply for NET after completing M.Com?
Ans. Yes, after completing M.Com from Patliputra University (a UGC-recognised state university), you are eligible to appear for UGC NET in Commerce (Paper I: General and Paper II: Commerce). The minimum eligibility for UGC NET is a Master's degree with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates). If you clear UGC NET with JRF, you become eligible for Junior Research Fellowship and can pursue PhD with a stipend. Clearing NET without JRF qualifies you for Assistant Professor positions in colleges. Many PPU M.Com graduates appear for UGC NET, and the syllabus covered at PPU (including Business Finance, Financial Management, Corporate Tax, Research Methodology) aligns well with the NET Commerce syllabus.
