St Aloysius PhD CS FAQs
Ques. Is the PhD in Computer Science at St Aloysius offered at the main campus or the AIMIT campus?
Ans. The PhD in Computer Science is offered through the School of Information Science and Technology, which is housed at the AIMIT (St Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology) campus in Beeri, Mangalore. AIMIT is a dedicated IT and management campus of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) and is separate from the main Kodialbail campus. The AIMIT campus has dedicated computing labs, a research infrastructure, and faculty specialising in AI, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, and related areas. Scholars enrolled in the PhD programme are expected to be present at the AIMIT campus for coursework, lab work, and research activities.
Ques. I have a B.Tech. in Computer Science with 76% marks but no Master's degree. Am I eligible to apply for the PhD programme?
Ans. Yes, you are eligible. As per UGC PhD Regulations 2022, candidates with a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor's degree (such as B.Tech./B.E.) with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate can apply directly for a PhD programme without a Master's degree. St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) follows this regulation. However, you will still need to appear for the university's entrance test (unless you hold a valid UGC-NET/GATE score) and clear the interview. It is advisable to confirm this directly with the university's Research and Development Cell before applying.
Ques. What research areas are available under the PhD Computer Science programme, and how do I choose a supervisor?
Ans. The department has four recognised PhD supervisors: Dr. Hemalatha N (Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Agri-informatics, Computational Biology, Pattern Recognition), Dr. Santhosh B (Cloud/Fog Computing, Digital Forensics), Dr. Jeevan Pinto (Computer Networks, Cloud Computing, IoT, Data Analytics, Machine Learning), and Dr. Ruban S (Artificial Intelligence, Healthcare Analytics, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Generative AI). At the time of application, candidates are generally expected to indicate their area of research interest. Supervisor allocation is done by the department based on vacancy, research alignment, and the supervisor's current student load. It is recommended to reach out to potential supervisors by email before applying to discuss research fit.
Ques. How does the fee payment work for the PhD programme, and are there any additional charges beyond the annual course fee?
Ans. The annual course fee for full-time PhD scholars in Computer Science (Basic Sciences and IT category) is Rs. 40,000 in Year 1, Rs. 45,000 in Year 2, and Rs. 50,000 in Year 3. Beyond 3 years, an increment of Rs. 5,000 per year is applied. These fees cover the course/programme fee only. Additional charges such as library fees, laboratory usage fees, examination fees, and thesis submission fees may be levied separately as per university norms. Hostel accommodation is available at the AIMIT campus but is charged separately. The application fee paid at the time of registration is non-refundable.
Ques. If I have a valid UGC-NET or GATE score, do I still need to appear for the university entrance test?
Ans. No. Candidates who hold a valid UGC-NET (with or without JRF), CSIR-NET, or GATE qualification are exempted from the university's written entrance test. They are directly called for a personal interview conducted by the department. This is in line with UGC PhD Regulations 2022, which mandate that NET/GATE qualified candidates need not appear for a separate written test at the institution. However, clearing the interview is mandatory for all candidates, and final selection is subject to the availability of vacancies and supervisor allocation.
Ques. Does St Aloysius University offer any financial support or fellowship to PhD scholars in Computer Science?
Ans. St Aloysius University offers a limited number of institutional research fellowships to select PhD scholars at the time of admission, based on merit and institutional guidelines. The amount and duration of these fellowships vary. Beyond institutional support, scholars can avail of the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme (MeitY, Government of India), which provides a monthly fellowship of Rs. 38,750 (Years 1-2) and Rs. 43,750 (Years 3-5) to eligible full-time PhD scholars in Electronics and IT disciplines. UGC-JRF holders can also continue their fellowship at the enrolled institution. Scholars are encouraged to apply for these external fellowships independently through the respective government portals.
