JLU Ph.D (Sociology) FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D in Sociology at JLU Bhopal available in Part Time / Working Professional mode, and how is it different from the Full Time programme?
Ans. Yes, JLU offers the Ph.D in Sociology specifically in the Working Professional (Part Time) mode for candidates who are currently employed. The key difference is in the fee structure: Working Professional students pay ₹1,75,000 per year compared to ₹1,20,000 per year for Full Time students. The coursework and research requirements are the same, but Working Professional students are given flexibility in scheduling their coursework sessions and research interactions with their guide, typically on weekends or through blended learning. The minimum duration remains 3 years for both modes.
Ques. Do I need to clear UGC NET to get admission into the Ph.D Sociology programme at JLU?
Ans. UGC NET is not mandatory for admission to JLU's PhD programme. JLU conducts its own entrance test called JLUET, and candidates who clear JLUET followed by a Personal Interview are eligible for admission. However, candidates with a valid UGC NET or JRF score in Sociology are exempted from JLUET. Additionally, JRF holders can avail the UGC fellowship of ₹37,000/month, which significantly reduces the financial burden of the programme. It is strongly advisable to attempt UGC NET before applying, as it also strengthens your research profile.
Ques. What research areas or topics can I pursue for my PhD in Sociology at JLU Bhopal?
Ans. JLU's School of Languages and Social Sciences supports research across a broad range of sociological themes including social stratification and inequality, gender and feminist studies, urban and rural sociology, tribal and indigenous communities, social movements and collective action, development sociology, and sociology of education. The specific research topic is finalised in consultation with the assigned research supervisor. Candidates are advised to have a preliminary research proposal ready at the time of the Personal Interview, as it demonstrates research readiness and helps in supervisor allocation.
Ques. Can I pursue this PhD while working full time in another city, or do I need to be physically present in Bhopal regularly?
Ans. The Working Professional mode at JLU is designed to accommodate candidates who are employed, but some physical presence on campus is required, particularly for coursework sessions, pre-submission seminars, and viva voce. Typically, coursework is conducted in a blended format with periodic campus visits. Candidates from other cities should factor in travel and accommodation costs. It is recommended to contact the admissions office directly at admission@jlu.edu.in to understand the current attendance requirements before applying, as these may vary by department and supervisor.
Ques. What is the validity of the PhD degree from JLU Bhopal, and is it recognised for teaching positions in colleges and universities?
Ans. JLU is a UGC-recognised private university established under the Madhya Pradesh Private University Act 2013 and is recognised under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956. A PhD degree from JLU is therefore a valid doctoral qualification recognised by UGC. However, for appointment as an Assistant Professor in central or state universities, candidates must also hold a valid UGC NET/SET qualification in addition to the PhD, as per the UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers) Regulations. The PhD alone qualifies you for research positions, industry roles, and some private college teaching posts.
Ques. What is the application fee for the PhD programme at JLU, and what documents are required at the time of application?
Ans. The application fee for JLU PhD admission is ₹1,600, payable online through the admission portal at apply.jlu.edu.in. Documents required at the time of application include: all academic marksheets from Class 10 onwards, PG degree certificate, proof of current employment (for Working Professional mode), a recent passport-size photograph, Aadhaar card copy, digital signature, and a research proposal or statement of purpose (recommended). International candidates must submit a valid passport copy. After submission, the university takes up to 7 working days to process the application and communicate the JLUET/PI schedule.
