JLU Ph.D. (Hospitality) FAQs

Ques. Is the Ph.D. (Hospitality) at JLU recognised by UGC, and will the degree be valid for academic/teaching positions?

Ans. Yes, JLU is a UGC-recognised private university established under the MP Private University Act, 2013, and is recognised under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. The Ph.D. programme follows UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations, 2016. A Ph.D. degree from JLU is therefore valid for applying to Assistant Professor positions in universities and colleges, subject to the candidate also meeting the UGC NET/JRF requirement (or being exempted from it as per UGC norms for Ph.D. holders from recognised universities).

Ques. Can I pursue the Ph.D. (Hospitality) at JLU as a working professional while continuing my job?

Ans. Yes, JLU offers the Ph.D. programme in both Full-Time and Working Professional modes. The Working Professional mode is designed for candidates who are employed and wish to pursue doctoral research alongside their careers. The annual fee for the Working Professional mode is Rs. 1,75,000 per year (compared to Rs. 1,20,000 for Full-Time). Working professionals are required to attend the university for coursework and research presentations as per the schedule, but the programme is structured to accommodate their professional commitments.

Ques. What is the minimum duration of the Ph.D. (Hospitality) at JLU, and can it be extended?

Ans. The minimum duration of the Ph.D. programme at JLU is 3 years (as per UGC Regulations, 2016). The maximum duration is typically 6 years for full-time candidates and may be extended further in exceptional cases with the approval of the university. The programme includes a mandatory coursework component in the first year, followed by research work, thesis submission, and viva voce. Candidates who do not complete within the minimum duration are required to pay annual fees for each additional year of extension.

Ques. Is UGC NET mandatory for Ph.D. (Hospitality) admission at JLU, or can I apply without it?

Ans. UGC NET/JRF is not mandatory for Ph.D. admission at JLU. Candidates without a UGC NET/JRF score can appear for JLURET (Jagran Lakecity University Research Entrance Test), which is the university's own entrance test for doctoral admissions. However, UGC NET/JRF qualified candidates are exempted from JLURET and can directly proceed to the Research Proposal Presentation and Interview round. Having a UGC NET/JRF qualification also makes candidates eligible for JRF fellowship funding from UGC, which is a significant financial benefit.

Ques. What research areas are available under Ph.D. (Hospitality) at JLU, and how is a research supervisor assigned?

Ans. The Ph.D. (Hospitality) at JLU covers research areas including Hotel Operations Management, Food and Beverage Management, Tourism and Destination Management, Hospitality Marketing, Sustainable Tourism, Revenue Management, and Hospitality Human Resource Management. Research supervisors (guides) are assigned by the university based on the candidate's proposed research area and the availability of faculty with relevant expertise in the Jagran School of Hospitality and Tourism. Candidates are encouraged to identify a potential research area and outline it in their Research Proposal at the time of application.

Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing a Ph.D. in Hospitality from JLU?

Ans. A Ph.D. in Hospitality from JLU opens up career opportunities in academia (Assistant Professor/Associate Professor positions in hotel management and hospitality institutes), research organisations, hospitality industry consulting, policy-making bodies related to tourism, and senior management roles in hotel chains and tourism companies. Candidates who qualify UGC NET/JRF alongside their Ph.D. are eligible to apply for faculty positions in universities and colleges across India. The hospitality sector in India is growing rapidly, and doctoral-level expertise is increasingly valued in both academic and industry settings.
