JLU Ph.D. (English Literature) FAQs
Ques. I am an English lecturer at a college. Can I pursue Ph.D. in English Literature (Part Time) at JLU while continuing my job?
Ans. Yes, the Part Time (Working Professional) Ph.D. mode at JLU is specifically designed for working professionals like college lecturers, school teachers, content writers, and others employed in relevant fields. You can continue your job while pursuing doctoral research. You will need to attend campus periodically for coursework sessions, seminars, and supervisor meetings, particularly during the first year. The flexible schedule is designed to accommodate your work commitments. Many English faculty members from colleges across Madhya Pradesh and Central India pursue their Ph.D. through this mode at JLU.
Ques. What research areas are available for Ph.D. in English Literature at JLU? Can I research Indian Writing in English or postcolonial literature?
Ans. JLU's Ph.D. in English Literature covers a wide range of research areas including British literature (from Old English to contemporary), American literature, Indian Writing in English (IWE), postcolonial literature, literary theory and criticism, gender and feminist literary studies, cultural studies, comparative literature, and diaspora literature. Research in Indian Writing in English and postcolonial literature is particularly active at JLU given the faculty's expertise. You should discuss your specific research interest with the department before applying to ensure a suitable research supervisor is available.
Ques. Is UGC-NET mandatory for Ph.D. admission at JLU? Does having a NET/JRF give any advantage?
Ans. UGC-NET is not mandatory for admission to JLU's Ph.D. (Working Professional) program. Admission is based on the JLURET/JLUET entrance test and personal interview. However, holding a valid UGC-NET or JRF score in English gives you a significant advantage: NET/JRF holders may be eligible for scholarship benefits at JLU, and JRF holders may also be eligible for the UGC Junior Research Fellowship (INR 37,000/month for the first two years), which can partially offset the program fees. Additionally, a NET/JRF score demonstrates research aptitude and may strengthen your application during the personal interview.
Ques. What is the difference in total fees between the Full Time and Part Time Ph.D. in English Literature at JLU?
Ans. The annual tuition fee for the Full Time Ph.D. at JLU is INR 1,20,000 per year, making the total program cost INR 4,00,000 (including one-time charges) over 3 years. The Working Professional (Part Time) mode costs INR 1,75,000 per year, with a total program cost of INR 5,65,000 over 3 years. The higher fee for the working professional mode reflects the additional administrative support, flexible scheduling, and dedicated faculty time required to accommodate working students. Both modes lead to the same Ph.D. degree with equal academic validity.
Ques. After completing Ph.D. in English Literature from JLU, will I be eligible for assistant professor positions in colleges and universities?
Ans. Yes. A Ph.D. from JLU, being a UGC-recognized university established under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956, is a valid qualification for assistant professor positions in Indian colleges and universities. As per UGC Regulations 2018, Ph.D. is an additional qualification alongside NET/SET for direct recruitment to assistant professor posts. If you already hold a NET/SET qualification, a Ph.D. from JLU further strengthens your candidacy for permanent faculty positions, promotions under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS), and eligibility for associate professor and professor designations in the future.
Ques. How is a research supervisor assigned for Ph.D. in English Literature at JLU? What if my research topic does not match any faculty member's expertise?
Ans. Research supervisors at JLU are assigned based on the candidate's proposed research area and the availability of faculty with relevant expertise in the Jagran School of Languages and Social Sciences. It is strongly recommended to review the faculty profiles and their research interests before applying, and to propose a research topic that aligns with available expertise. If your specific topic does not have a direct match, the department may suggest a related area or a co-supervisor arrangement. You can contact the admissions office at admission@jlu.edu.in or call +91 7471110103 to discuss supervisor availability before submitting your application.
