JLU Ph.D (Economics) FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D in Economics at JLU Bhopal available in Part Time / Working Professional mode, and how does it differ from the Full Time programme?
Ans. Yes, JLU offers the Ph.D in Economics in the Working Professional (Part Time) mode for candidates who are currently employed. The key difference is in the fee structure: Working Professional students pay ₹1,75,000 per year compared to ₹1,20,000 per year for Full Time students. The coursework and research requirements are the same, but Working Professional students get flexibility in scheduling coursework and supervisor interactions, typically on weekends or through blended learning. The minimum duration is 3 years for both modes.
Ques. What research areas are available under the Ph.D in Economics at JLU?
Ans. The Ph.D in Economics at JLU covers a wide range of research areas including macroeconomic policy, microeconomic theory, development economics, agricultural and rural economics, public finance and fiscal policy, labour economics, environmental and resource economics, international trade and finance, health economics, and urban economics. The specific research topic is finalised in consultation with the assigned research supervisor. Candidates are advised to prepare a preliminary research proposal before the Personal Interview.
Ques. Do I need to clear UGC NET to get admission into the Ph.D Economics programme at JLU?
Ans. UGC NET is not mandatory for admission. JLU conducts its own entrance test called JLUET, and candidates who clear JLUET followed by a Personal Interview are eligible. However, candidates with a valid UGC NET or JRF score in Economics are exempted from JLUET. JRF holders can additionally avail the UGC fellowship of ₹37,000/month, which substantially offsets the programme cost. Attempting UGC NET before applying is strongly recommended as it strengthens your research profile and may provide financial benefits.
Ques. Is the Ph.D (Economics) degree from JLU valid for teaching positions at colleges and universities?
Ans. Yes, a Ph.D from JLU is a valid doctoral qualification as JLU is UGC-recognised under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956. For appointment as an Assistant Professor in Economics at government or aided degree colleges, candidates must also hold a valid UGC NET/SET qualification in Economics in addition to the PhD, as per UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers) Regulations. The PhD alone qualifies you for research positions, policy roles in government and think tanks, and faculty positions at many private colleges.
Ques. Can government officers or civil servants apply for the Ph.D (Economics) Part Time programme at JLU?
Ans. Yes, government officers and civil servants are among the most common applicants for the Working Professional PhD in Economics at JLU. The flexible scheduling of the programme is specifically designed to accommodate such candidates. Government employees typically need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their department, which should be submitted along with the proof of employment at the time of application. The blended learning format allows them to attend coursework sessions during weekends or holidays.
Ques. What is the application fee and what documents are required for the Ph.D (Economics) Part Time programme at JLU?
