JLU M.Des FAQs

Ques. Does JLU actually offer M.Des in Industrial Design specifically, or is it only User Experience Design?

Ans. Yes, JLU officially offers M.Des (Industrial Design) as a separate specialisation under the Jagran School of Design, distinct from M.Des (User Experience). The official JLU website has a dedicated programme page for M.Des (Industrial Design) at jlu.edu.in/programs/m-des-industrial-design/. The course focuses on product design, ergonomics, materials, manufacturing processes, and sustainable design, whereas the UX specialisation focuses on digital interfaces and user research. Both are 2-year full-time programmes with the same fee structure.

Ques. What kind of design portfolio should I prepare for the M.Des Industrial Design admission at JLU?

Ans. For M.Des (Industrial Design) admission at JLU, your portfolio should ideally showcase your ability to think through design problems and present solutions visually. Include sketches, concept drawings, 3D models (physical or digital), product prototypes, and any design projects you have completed during your undergraduate studies. The portfolio review is part of the Personal Interview (PI) process. Students on design forums suggest including 8-12 projects that demonstrate a range of skills including ideation, material exploration, and final product presentation. Even if you are from a non-design background, a strong portfolio demonstrating creative problem-solving can strengthen your application.

Ques. What are the studio and lab facilities available for M.Des Industrial Design students at JLU?

Ans. JLU's Jagran School of Design is equipped with dedicated design studios, model-making labs, fabrication facilities, and computer labs with industry-standard design software. The campus has 45+ labs across disciplines, and the design school specifically has facilities for prototyping and product development. Students have access to the 28,000 sq ft pyramid-shaped library with over 42,000 books and journals. The campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled. Students on review platforms have rated JLU's infrastructure at 4.6 out of 5, which is one of the highest scores among private universities in Madhya Pradesh.

Ques. What is the total cost of studying M.Des Industrial Design at JLU including hostel?

Ans. The total course fee for M.Des (Industrial Design) is Rs. 3,80,000 over 2 years (Rs. 1,90,000 per year). If you opt for hostel accommodation, the additional cost ranges from Rs. 1,34,620 per year (Triple Occupancy Non-AC) to Rs. 2,22,620 per year (Single Ensuite AC), inclusive of mess charges. So the total cost including the most affordable hostel option would be approximately Rs. 6,49,240 over 2 years, and with the premium single AC room it would be approximately Rs. 8,25,240 over 2 years. Bus fees of Rs. 15,000 per semester apply additionally if you use university transport.

Ques. What career opportunities are available after M.Des Industrial Design from JLU?

Ans. Graduates of M.Des (Industrial Design) from JLU can pursue careers as product designers, industrial designers, design consultants, UX/UI designers (with additional skills), furniture designers, automotive designers, packaging designers, and design researchers. Industries that hire industrial designers include consumer electronics, automotive, FMCG, furniture, medical devices, and design consultancies. With the growing emphasis on design thinking in Indian industry, M.Des graduates are increasingly sought after by companies like Tata, Mahindra, Samsung, and design studios. JLU's placement cell and industry partnerships provide a good starting point for campus placements.

Ques. Is the M.Des Industrial Design at JLU recognised and what is the university's standing in design education?

Ans. JLU is a UGC-recognised private university established under the Madhya Pradesh Private University Act 2013. The M.Des programme is a UGC-approved postgraduate degree. JLU has received the QS I-GAUGE Diamond Rating and is ranked No. 1 in Madhya Pradesh and No. 25 in India. While JLU is not a National Institute of Design (NID) or IIT, it is one of the few private universities in Central India offering a structured M.Des programme with dedicated design infrastructure. Students considering JLU for M.Des should weigh it against NID, IIT, and other premier design institutes if they qualify for those, but for students in Central India seeking quality design education at a reasonable cost, JLU is a strong option.
