JLU B.Des FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Des (Interior Design) and B.Arch at JLU, and which should I choose?
Ans. B.Des (Interior Design) and B.Arch are both offered under the Jagran School of Architecture at JLU, but they are distinct programmes. B.Arch is a 5-year professional degree that qualifies graduates to practice as licensed architects (after CoA registration) and covers building design, structural systems, urban planning, and construction technology. B.Des (Interior Design) is a 4-year design degree focused on interior spaces, spatial planning, furniture, lighting, and material aesthetics. If you want to design buildings and become a licensed architect, B.Arch is the right choice. If you are more interested in designing interior spaces, residential and commercial interiors, and spatial experiences, B.Des (Interior Design) is the better fit.
Ques. Is the B.Des (Interior Design) degree from JLU recognised by any professional body?
Ans. JLU is a UGC-recognised private university under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956, and the B.Des degree is a valid undergraduate degree for all purposes including employment, higher education, and government jobs. However, unlike B.Arch (which is regulated by the Council of Architecture), B.Des (Interior Design) is not regulated by a specific professional body in India. Graduates can work as interior designers without a mandatory licence, but professional membership in bodies like the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID) can enhance career prospects. The degree is fully valid for pursuing M.Des or other postgraduate programmes.
Ques. What is the total fee for B.Des (Interior Design) at JLU, and is it affordable compared to other interior design colleges?
Ans. The total fee for B.Des (Interior Design) at JLU Bhopal for the entire 4-year duration is Rs. 5,80,000, which works out to Rs. 1,35,000 per year (excluding one-time charges). This is notably more affordable than many private design schools in India, while still offering a structured, studio-based curriculum under the School of Architecture. The one-time charges include Rs. 20,000 admission fee (non-refundable), Rs. 10,000 caution money (refundable), and Rs. 10,000 alumni fund (non-refundable). Hostel and mess are optional and charged separately.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after B.Des (Interior Design) from JLU?
Ans. Graduates of B.Des (Interior Design) from JLU can pursue careers as Interior Designers, Space Planners, Furniture Designers, Retail Store Designers, Hospitality Interior Consultants, Set Designers, and Exhibition Designers. The programme's focus on spatial design and material studies makes graduates well-suited for roles in interior design firms, architecture studios, real estate developers, hospitality companies, and retail chains. Many graduates also go on to pursue M.Des or M.Arch programmes in India or abroad, or start their own interior design practices.
Ques. Does JLU require NATA for B.Des (Interior Design) admission?
Ans. No, NATA is not mandatory for B.Des (Interior Design) at JLU. NATA is specifically required for B.Arch admissions. For B.Des (Interior Design), admission is based on the university's own entrance test (JLUET) and a Personal Interview. However, since the programme is housed under the School of Architecture, students with a NATA score or a strong design portfolio may be viewed favourably during the PI round. Students are advised to prepare a portfolio of any creative or design work they have done to present during the interview.
Ques. What kind of studio and lab facilities are available for Interior Design students at JLU?
Ans. Interior Design students at JLU benefit from the facilities of the Jagran School of Architecture, which includes dedicated design studios, model-making labs, material libraries, and design workshops. Students work on live studio projects throughout the programme, with access to tools and equipment for model-making, spatial prototyping, and material experimentation. The campus also has a 28,000 sq. ft. pyramid-shaped library with design and architecture references. Being in the same school as B.Arch students, Interior Design students also benefit from architecture-informed design thinking and collaborative studio culture.
