SGTU PhD ECE FAQs
Ques. What is the eligibility for Ph.D. Electronics and Communication Engineering at SGT University? Can a B.Tech. graduate apply directly?
Ans. No, a B.Tech. graduate cannot apply directly for the Ph.D. programme. The eligibility requires a Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Electronics and Communication Engineering or a relevant specialisation with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates). Candidates with an M.Sc. in Electronics or a related discipline may also be considered, subject to the availability of a suitable research supervisor. B.Tech. graduates who wish to pursue a Ph.D. must first complete an M.Tech. programme.
Ques. Is the GATE score mandatory for Ph.D. ECE admission at SGT University?
Ans. GATE qualification is not mandatory for admission, but GATE-qualified candidates are exempted from the SGT University PhD entrance examination and are directly called for a Personal Interview/Viva. Candidates without GATE qualification must appear for the university's PhD entrance test, which consists of 70 multiple-choice questions (50% subject-oriented and 50% research methodology). Having a valid GATE score also makes candidates eligible for GATE-based fellowships and stipends from AICTE and other bodies, which can significantly support their research tenure.
Ques. What research areas are available for Ph.D. ECE at SGT University?
Ans. The Ph.D. in Electronics and Communication Engineering at SGT University covers a broad range of research areas including VLSI design and embedded systems, signal and image processing, wireless and mobile communications, antenna design and RF engineering, biomedical engineering and healthcare technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning applications in communication systems, and optical communications. The specific research topic is finalised in consultation with the assigned research supervisor based on the scholar's area of interest and the faculty's ongoing research projects.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing a Ph.D. in ECE from SGT University?
Ans. Ph.D. ECE graduates from SGT University can pursue careers as Lecturers/Professors in engineering colleges and universities, Research Scientists and R&D Engineers in companies such as BHEL, BEL, Intel, IBM, AMD, Texas Instruments, Samsung Electronics, and CISCO, Network Planning Engineers and Telecom Engineers in telecom companies, Electronic Design Engineers in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing firms, and Wireless Communications Engineers in defence and space research organisations such as DRDO and ISRO. The growing demand for 5G, IoT, and AI-driven communication systems has significantly increased the demand for Ph.D.-qualified ECE professionals.
Ques. What is the duration of the Ph.D. ECE programme at SGT University, and what happens if I cannot complete it in 3 years?
Ans. The Ph.D. programme has a minimum duration of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years as per UGC and AICTE norms. If a scholar is unable to complete the thesis within 3 years, they can continue for up to 5 years by paying the annual tuition fee of Rs. 1,50,000 for each additional year. Extensions beyond 5 years may be granted in exceptional circumstances with proper justification and approval from the Vice Chancellor. Scholars are expected to complete their coursework in the first year and then focus on research, publications, and thesis writing in subsequent years.
Ques. What is the total cost of pursuing a Ph.D. in ECE at SGT University, and are there any external funding options?
Ans. The tuition fee is Rs. 1,50,000 per annum. For the minimum 3-year duration, the total tuition cost is Rs. 4,50,000. If the programme extends to 4 or 5 years, the total tuition cost would be Rs. 6,00,000 or Rs. 7,50,000 respectively. The one-time application fee is Rs. 1,500.
