SGTU LL.M. FAQs
Ques. Does SGT University require CLAT PG or any national entrance exam score for LL.M. admission?
Ans. No, SGT University does not require CLAT PG, AILET PG, or any other national law entrance exam score for LL.M. admission. Admission is based on merit in the qualifying LL.B. degree (minimum 55% aggregate) and a personal interview. CLAT PG and AILET PG are only required for admissions to National Law Universities (NLUs) and NLU Delhi respectively. Students applying to SGT University can apply directly through the university's admission portal without appearing for any national entrance exam.
Ques. What are the four specialisations available in the LL.M. programme at SGT University, and how do I choose one?
Ans. SGT University offers four specialisations in its LL.M. programme: Criminal Law, Corporate and Commercial Laws, Technology Law and Data Protection, and Intellectual Property Rights Law. The specialisation in Technology Law and Data Protection is particularly relevant given the growing importance of data privacy laws (DPDP Act 2023) and cyber law in India. Candidates choose their preferred specialisation at the time of admission. It is advisable to select a specialisation aligned with your career goals, whether in litigation, corporate practice, academia, or policy work.
Ques. Is the SGT University LL.M. degree recognised by the Bar Council of India, and can I practise as an advocate after completing it?
Ans. Yes, the LL.M. programme at SGT University is recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and follows UGC guidelines for the one-year LL.M. format. However, the LL.M. itself does not grant the right to practise as an advocate; that right is conferred by the LL.B. degree and enrolment with a State Bar Council. The LL.M. enhances your legal expertise and is particularly valuable for academic positions, judicial services, corporate legal roles, and policy-making. Graduates can also pursue Ph.D. (Law) after completing the LL.M.
Ques. What is the scope of the Technology Law and Data Protection specialisation, and is it relevant in today's job market?
Ans. The Technology Law and Data Protection specialisation covers subjects like Data Protection and Data Privacy, Electronic Commerce, Telecommunication and Media Laws, Law of Cyber Crimes and Forensics, and International Trade Law. With India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (DPDP Act) coming into force and the rapid growth of the technology sector, there is a significant and growing demand for lawyers specialising in data privacy, cybersecurity law, and technology regulation. Graduates with this specialisation can work with technology companies, law firms specialising in tech law, regulatory bodies, and government departments dealing with digital governance.
Ques. What practical exposure is available during the LL.M. programme at SGT University?
Ans. SGT University encourages and supports practical exposure through internships, legal clinics, and court observations as part of the LL.M. curriculum. The Faculty of Law has connections with courts, law firms, and legal organisations in the Delhi NCR region, providing students with opportunities for real-world legal experience. Students are also encouraged to develop scholarly legal writing, publishable research papers, and policy-oriented work as part of their academic training. The university's location in Gurugram, close to Delhi, provides additional access to the Supreme Court, High Courts, and major corporate law firms.
Ques. Can I pursue a Ph.D. (Law) at SGT University after completing the LL.M., and what are the requirements?
Ans. Yes, SGT University offers a Ph.D. (Law) programme, and LL.M. graduates are eligible to apply. To be eligible for Ph.D. (Law) admission, candidates must hold an LL.M. degree with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/EWS). The Ph.D. admission process involves a university-level entrance examination (70 MCQ questions) followed by a personal interview; UGC-NET/JRF qualified candidates may be exempted from the written test. The Ph.D. (Law) programme follows UGC Ph.D. Regulations 2022 and has a minimum duration of 3 years. Completing an LL.M. before a Ph.D. strengthens the research foundation and is recommended for those aiming for academic careers in law.
