MU Ph.D (IT) FAQs
Ques. As a working IT professional, can I pursue this PhD part-time without taking a break from my job?
Ans. Yes, Marwadi University's Part Time PhD in Information Technology is specifically designed for working professionals. You are required to submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer. You can pursue research at your workplace and/or at MU. The university also offers an Industry PhD variant where you can work on industry-defined problems at your own organisation under dual supervision - one from MU faculty and one from your organisation. Coursework can be attended in regular mode or through a capsule schedule designed for working professionals.
Ques. What is the difference between the regular Part Time PhD and the Industry PhD at Marwadi University?
Ans. The regular Part Time PhD requires you to be employed and submit an NOC, but your research topic is academically driven and supervised solely by an MU faculty member. The Industry PhD, on the other hand, is specifically for employees who want to conduct research on problems defined by their own organisation. In the Industry PhD, you have a dual supervisor - one from MU and one from your company (Field Supervisor). The IP rights of research outcomes in the Industry PhD belong to the organisation, whereas in the regular Part Time PhD, the academic IP norms of MU apply.
Ques. How many semesters of coursework are mandatory, and can I complete them while working?
Ans. Every PhD scholar at MU must complete a minimum of 12 credits of coursework within the first year of registration (with a grace period of 6 months). The coursework includes Research Methodology (4 credits), Research and Publication Ethics (2 credits), and two domain-specific courses (3 credits each). For Industry PhD and Part Time scholars, coursework can be completed either through regular weekly classes or through a capsule schedule specifically designed for working professionals, making it manageable alongside a full-time job.
Ques. Is UGC-NET or GATE mandatory to apply for PhD in IT at Marwadi University?
Ans. No, UGC-NET or GATE is not mandatory. Candidates without these qualifications can appear in the university's own PhD entrance test (online MCQ-based, 1 hour), which covers 90% subject-specific questions and 10% research methodology. However, candidates with valid UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE, or CEED scores are exempted from the entrance test and are directly called for the personal interview. Having a national-level qualification can also make you eligible for external fellowships like JRF.
Ques. What is the minimum publication requirement before I can submit my PhD thesis?
Ans. Before submitting the synopsis (which precedes thesis submission), you must have published a minimum of two research papers in SCOPUS-indexed, Web of Science (Core Collection) indexed, or ABDC/UGC CARE listed peer-reviewed journals. At least one of these papers can be from a SCOPUS-indexed conference. You must be the first author of these publications, and the papers must be directly related to your PhD research work. This requirement applies to both full-time and part-time scholars.
Ques. What happens if I am unable to complete my PhD within the maximum allowed duration?
Ans. For Part Time PhD scholars, the maximum duration is 7 years from the date of registration. The university may allow an extension of up to 2 years beyond this maximum on the recommendation of the Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC). Women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) are eligible for an additional 2-year relaxation. In any case, the total period for completion cannot exceed 10 years. If the thesis is not submitted within the extended period, the registration is cancelled, and re-registration is not permitted after cancellation.
