Ques. Can a candidate with a Master’s degree other than LLM apply for NUJS PhD in Law?
Ans. Yes. NUJS accepts candidates with any Master’s degree with interdisciplinary law potential from a UGC-recognised university, provided they meet the 55% marks requirement. Candidates with MA in Political Science, History, or Sociology with demonstrated interest in legal research are eligible. However, a strong research proposal connecting the subject to law is essential for shortlisting.
Ques. Is the entrance test mandatory for all PhD applicants at NUJS?
Ans. No. Candidates who have qualified UGC/SLET/SET/JRF examinations or who hold an M.Phil. degree are exempt from the written entrance test. They are evaluated directly based on the research proposal and an interview. Other candidates must appear for a 100-mark written test covering research methodology (50 marks) and law subjects (50 marks).
Ques. What is the total cost of completing a Ph.D. in Law at NUJS?
Ans. The minimum total fee for a three-year Ph.D. at NUJS is INR 1,65,000. This includes a one-time registration fee of INR 15,000 and an annual tuition fee of INR 50,000 per year. If the thesis is not submitted within three years, the annual fee continues for each additional year up to the maximum permissible period.
Ques. How detailed does the research proposal for NUJS PhD admission need to be?
Ans. The research proposal must be up to 3,000 words and must include the title of the research, problem statement, literature review, research objectives, research questions, hypotheses where applicable, methodology, and study limitations. The proposal is evaluated by NUJS faculty for originality, feasibility, and academic rigour before shortlisting candidates for the entrance test or interview.

Ans. Ph.D. graduates from NUJS pursue careers in law school academia, senior legal research positions at think tanks and policy institutes, judicial academies, and national level governmental advisory roles.
