CSJMU PhD(Law) FAQs
Ques. Is it mandatory to qualify UGC-NET to apply for PhD (Law) at CSJMU, or can I apply directly through the university entrance test?
Ans. No, UGC-NET qualification is not mandatory to apply for PhD (Law) at CSJMU. The university conducts its own entrance test called CSJMU-ET, which consists of 70 MCQ questions (35 on Research Methodology and 35 subject-specific Law questions) in offline mode. However, candidates who hold a valid UGC-JRF are exempted from this entrance test and are given preference in the merit list. If you do not have JRF, you can still apply and qualify through CSJMU-ET followed by an interview.
Ques. How many PhD seats are available in Law at CSJMU campus, and is competition high?
Ans. As per the 2026-27 admission brochure, only 2 seats are available on the CSJMU campus for PhD in Law, with 8 additional seats in affiliated colleges. Given the limited campus seats and the popularity of the Law department, competition can be significant, especially for the campus seats. Candidates with UGC-JRF are given preference, so having a JRF significantly improves your chances of securing a campus seat.
Ques. Can I pursue PhD (Law) at CSJMU while working as a lawyer or in a government job?
Ans. CSJMU's PhD ordinance states that no candidate admitted to the PhD programme shall be entitled to continue in or accept any remunerative assignment during the period of enrolment. This means full-time employment alongside the PhD is not permitted under the regular PhD programme. However, sponsored candidates from industries or government organisations may be admitted through a separate interview process. Serving faculty members of affiliated colleges are also eligible to apply with certain conditions.
Ques. What are the research areas available under PhD (Law) at CSJMU's Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Legal Studies?
Ans. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Legal Studies has faculty specialising in Environmental Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Business Law, Intellectual Property Law, and International Law. The department's director, Dr. Smriti Roy, specialises in Environmental Law and Climate Change Governance. Before applying, it is advisable to check the list of approved supervisors on the CSJMU research portal (csjmu.ac.in/research/phd-supervisors-list/) to identify a supervisor whose research interests align with your proposed topic.
Ques. What is the total duration of the PhD (Law) programme and what happens if I cannot submit my thesis within the stipulated time?
Ans. The PhD programme has a minimum duration of 3 years (including mandatory pre-PhD coursework) and a maximum of 6 years from the date of registration. If a candidate fails to submit the thesis within 6 years, their registration is automatically cancelled. In exceptional circumstances, the Academic Council may grant a one-year extension if the Research Development Committee (RDC) report is satisfactory or on genuine medical grounds. Women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) are eligible for an additional relaxation of up to 2 years.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for PhD Law scholars at CSJMU, and what are the approximate costs?
Ans. Yes, CSJMU has on-campus hostel facilities for both boys and girls. For 2026-27, the annual hostel fee ranges from Rs. 20,620 (Ganga Girls Hostel - EWS) to Rs. 36,370 (Swarn Jayanti Boys Hostel), inclusive of room rent, health insurance, and management fee. Mess/food charges are separate. Hostel accommodation is optional and not mandatory for PhD scholars. Allotment is subject to availability and is managed by the respective hostel wardens. PhD scholars are advised to apply for hostel accommodation early through the Samarth portal (csjmu.samarth.edu.in).
