CSJMU Ph.D. (Hindi) FAQs
Ques. How many seats are available for Ph.D. Hindi at CSJMU, and is it very competitive to get admission?
Ans. Ph.D. Hindi is one of the most popular doctoral programmes at CSJMU, with a large number of seats available. In the 2026-27 session, over 40 seats were allotted in Hindi Literature across affiliated colleges alone, in addition to seats at the university campus. However, competition is also high given the large number of applicants. Candidates with UGC NET/JRF qualification have a significant advantage as they are directly called for an interview without appearing in the entrance test, and JRF holders also receive a monthly fellowship.
Ques. What are the main research areas available for Ph.D. Hindi at CSJMU?
Ans. CSJMU's Hindi department offers research across a wide spectrum of Hindi studies including ancient and medieval Hindi literature (Bhakti and Riti periods), modern Hindi literature (fiction, poetry, drama, and criticism), Hindi linguistics and grammar, folk literature, comparative literature, women's writing in Hindi, Dalit literature, and translation studies. The university has multiple approved supervisors with expertise in different sub-fields. You should review the approved supervisor list on the CSJMU website and contact potential supervisors before applying to align your research proposal with available expertise.
Ques. I am currently working as a Hindi teacher in a government college affiliated to CSJMU. Can I pursue Ph.D. Hindi without appearing in the entrance test?
Ans. Yes, Assistant Professors and Associate Professors holding regular appointments in government colleges affiliated to CSJMU who have successfully completed their probation are required to appear only in the interview, not the written entrance test. This is a specific exemption provided in the CSJMU Ph.D. admission brochure. You will need to produce proof of your regular appointment and probation completion at the time of counselling. Additionally, if you hold UGC NET/JRF qualification, you are also directly exempted from the entrance test.
Ques. What is the total fee for completing Ph.D. Hindi at CSJMU in 3 years, and are there any hidden charges?
Ans. For a General/OBC candidate completing the Ph.D. in the minimum 3-year period, the total cost is Rs. 1,07,000. This includes the one-time admission fee of Rs. 45,000, annual fees of Rs. 10,000 per year for 3 years (Rs. 30,000), synopsis/RDC fee of Rs. 6,000, thesis evaluation fee of Rs. 15,000, viva fee of Rs. 10,000, and provisional certificate fee of Rs. 1,000. There are no hidden charges beyond these, but if your thesis is returned for revision, an additional revised thesis evaluation fee of Rs. 10,000 applies. If you change your supervisor, a supervisor change fee of Rs. 5,000 is charged. SC/ST/PwD candidates pay Rs. 92,000 for a 3-year completion.
Ques. Is the pre-Ph.D. coursework mandatory, and how long does it take?
Ans. Yes, pre-Ph.D. coursework is mandatory for all scholars admitted to the Ph.D. programme at CSJMU, as per UGC Ph.D. Regulations 2022. The coursework is typically of one semester duration and covers research methodology, subject-specific advanced topics, and computer applications in research. Scholars who have already cleared M.Phil. coursework with a minimum of 55% marks may be exempted from the pre-Ph.D. coursework, subject to the decision of the competent authority. The coursework syllabus is available on the CSJMU research website.
Ques. Can I submit my Ph.D. thesis in Hindi, or is it mandatory to write in English?
Ans. Ph.D. theses in the Hindi department at CSJMU are typically submitted in Hindi, which is the medium of instruction and research for this programme. This is one of the key advantages of pursuing Ph.D. Hindi at CSJMU, as scholars can conduct their research and write their thesis in their primary language. The thesis must follow the prescribed format as per CSJMU Ph.D. Ordinance 2021, including a structured abstract, literature review, research methodology, and bibliography. The university also accepts theses with a bilingual abstract (Hindi and English) for wider academic accessibility.
