CSJMU Ph.D. (Chemistry) FAQs
Ques. Is the CSJMU entrance test mandatory for PhD Chemistry admission, or can I get direct admission with UGC-NET/CSIR-NET?
Ans. Candidates who hold a valid UGC-NET (with or without JRF) or CSIR-NET certificate are exempted from the CSJMU Research Entrance Test (CRET). They are directly called for a subject-wise interview and presentation before the Selection Committee. However, qualifying the interview is mandatory for all candidates, including NET/JRF holders. The final merit list is prepared based on interview performance for exempted candidates. It is important to carry the original NET/JRF certificate at the time of counselling for verification.
Ques. What are the key research areas available under PhD Chemistry at CSJMU's Department of Chemistry?
Ans. The Department of Chemistry at CSJMU offers research supervision in Organic Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Natural Products Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Polymer-Surfactant Interaction, Inorganic Chemistry, Polymer Nano Composites, and Fragrance and Flavour Chemistry. Faculty members include specialists in Organic Chemistry (Dr. B.P. Singh, Dr. Rashmi Dubey), Physical Chemistry/Chemical Kinetics (Dr. Ratna Shukla), and Polymer/Interpenetrating Polymer Networks (Dr. P.S. Niranjan, Dr. Meraj Jafri). The list of approved supervisors is available at csjmu.ac.in/research/phd-supervisors-list/.
Ques. What is the duration of the PhD Chemistry programme at CSJMU, and is pre-PhD coursework compulsory?
Ans. The PhD programme at CSJMU has a minimum duration of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years, referred to as the residency period. Pre-PhD coursework is mandatory for all newly admitted scholars as per UGC Regulations 2022. The coursework covers Research Methodology, Computer Applications, and subject-specific advanced topics in Chemistry. Scholars must successfully complete the coursework before proceeding to independent research. Progress reports must be submitted every six months throughout the programme.
Ques. What institutional collaborations and research facilities are available for PhD Chemistry scholars at CSJMU?
Ans. The Department of Chemistry has collaborative research ties with IIT Kanpur, IIT Indore, DMSRDE Kanpur (Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment), MNIT Allahabad, IISER Mohali, and the Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre (FFDC) Kannauj. The department has well-equipped separate laboratories for UG, PG, and research students, along with smart classrooms and seminar halls. Faculty members are actively engaged in DST and CV Raman research projects.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing a PhD in Chemistry from CSJMU?
Ans. A PhD in Chemistry from CSJMU opens career opportunities in academic positions (Assistant Professor, Lecturer) in universities and colleges, research scientist roles in government organisations such as CSIR, DRDO, DMSRDE, and DST, and positions in pharmaceutical companies (Sun Pharma, Mankind, Akums Pharmaceuticals), chemical industries, food companies, and fragrance and flavour industries. Alumni of the department are placed in reputed companies and research institutions including IITs and NITs. Graduates can also pursue post-doctoral research in India or abroad.
Ques. Can I pursue PhD Chemistry at CSJMU if my PG degree is in Industrial Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Chemistry rather than pure Chemistry?
Ans. Yes, candidates with a PG degree in allied subjects such as Industrial Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Materials Science, or other related disciplines are eligible to apply for the PhD in Chemistry at CSJMU, provided they meet the minimum marks criteria (55% for General/OBC, 50% for SC/ST/Differently-abled). The department specifically offers M.Sc. Industrial Chemistry and M.Sc. Chemistry with specialisation in Fragrance and Flavour Chemistry, and research in these areas is actively pursued. Eligibility is verified at the time of counselling.
