VMU Ph.D. Pharmacognosy FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between Full-Time and Part-Time Ph.D. programs at Vinayaka Missions University?
Ans. Full-Time Ph.D. scholars are required to be in full-time residence at the institution and cannot undertake any employment or pursue other programs simultaneously. They receive monthly research fellowships (Rs. 25,000-30,000) and have access to all university facilities. Part-Time Ph.D. is available for external candidates (Rs. 75,000/year) and internal faculty (Rs. 25,000/year) with a minimum compulsory residential attendance of 45 days per year. Full-time scholars typically complete their research in 3-5 years, while part-time scholars may take longer. The full-time option is ideal for those who can dedicate themselves entirely to research, while part-time suits working professionals.
Ques. Am I exempted from the Ph.D. Entrance Examination if I have qualified in UGC-NET?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have qualified in UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE, CEED, or similar national-level exams are exempted from the written entrance examination. However, they must still appear for the interview round, which carries 30 marks and evaluates research competence, feasibility of research at the institution, and potential contribution to knowledge. The interview is mandatory for all candidates, including those exempted from the entrance test. This ensures that all scholars, regardless of their entrance exam status, are thoroughly evaluated for their research aptitude and suitability for the program.
Ques. What is the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) and what role does it play?
Ans. The Research Advisory Committee consists of the research supervisor (convener), two experts (one internal from the same or different department, and one external from outside VMRF-DU institutions), and a co-supervisor if applicable. The RAC reviews your research proposal, finalizes the research topic, guides your research work, identifies required coursework, reviews your pre-synopsis presentation, and acts as an Academic Integrity Panel for plagiarism checks. The RAC meets periodically to monitor your progress and provide guidance throughout your Ph.D. journey. This committee structure ensures multidisciplinary perspectives and maintains research quality standards.
Ques. What are the mandatory coursework and examinations I need to complete during my Ph.D.?
Ans. All Ph.D. scholars must complete coursework in Research Methodology and Research & Publications Ethics. After completing the coursework, you must appear for the Pre-Ph.D. Examination (consisting of three papers). For Pharmacy, the Pre-Ph.D. exam fee is Rs. 18,000. Following successful completion of Pre-Ph.D. exams and coursework, you proceed to research work, synopsis submission (Rs. 10,000 fee), thesis submission (Rs. 15,000 fee), and finally the Viva-Voce examination (Rs. 10,000 fee). These are mandatory components of the Ph.D. program and must be completed in sequence to progress toward degree completion.
Ques. What are the publication requirements for Ph.D. completion in Pharmacognosy?
Ans. According to VMRF-DU regulations, Ph.D. scholars in Pharmacy (including Pharmacognosy) must publish their research findings in indexed journals (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, or UGC CARE listed journals). The exact number of publications required may vary, but research scholars are expected to contribute to peer-reviewed publications as part of their research deliverables. Your Research Advisory Committee monitors publication progress annually, and continuation of fellowship depends on demonstrated research output including journal publications and conference presentations. This requirement ensures that your research contributes meaningfully to the scientific community.
Ques. What happens if I want to change my research supervisor or research topic during my Ph.D.?
Ans. If you wish to change your research supervisor on reasonable grounds, the university permits this with a one-time fee of Rs. 5,000. For changing your research topic, you would need to seek approval from your Research Advisory Committee and the university. Such changes require proper documentation and justification. Additionally, if you need to extend your Ph.D. duration beyond the normal period, an extension fee of Rs. 10,000 per 6 months applies. For re-registration (if required), the fee is Rs. 20,000. It is advisable to discuss any such changes with your supervisor and the Ph.D. section well in advance to ensure smooth processing.
