VMU Ph.D. Biomedical Engineering FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between full-time and part-time Ph.D. programs at VMU?
Ans. Full-time Ph.D. candidates must pursue research exclusively at the university and maintain mandatory on-campus attendance during working hours, signing attendance registers daily. They cannot undertake any employment or pursue other studies simultaneously. Part-time candidates can continue their employment while pursuing research, with a minimum of 45 days residential attendance per year. Full-time candidates are eligible for research fellowships (₹25,000-30,000/month), while part-time external candidates pay higher tuition fees (₹75,000/year) compared to full-time candidates (₹50,000/year).
Ques. What are the course work requirements for Ph.D. (Biomedical Engineering)?
Ans. All Ph.D. scholars must complete a minimum of three courses (9 credits) within the first two semesters as prescribed by the Doctoral Committee. These courses typically include: (1) Research Methodology in the subject, (2) A background subject related to Ph.D. research, and (3) An advanced subject in the area of research. Scholars must score a minimum of 55% marks in course work to continue the program. If a candidate scores below 55%, they are given a grace period of six months for re-examination.
Ques. What is the comprehensive examination and when is it conducted?
Ans. The comprehensive examination is a mandatory assessment conducted after completion of two semesters but before the completion of four semesters. It consists of written and oral components as recommended by the Doctoral Committee. The examination is conducted by a panel including Doctoral Committee members and an external examiner. If the performance is unsatisfactory, candidates get one more opportunity within six months. Failure to pass within the prescribed timeframe results in cancellation of provisional registration.
Ques. What are the publication requirements before submitting the thesis?
Ans. Before submitting the synopsis (which comes before thesis submission), candidates must have published at least two original research papers from their research work in indexed journals (SCOPUS/Web of Science/PubMed/IEEE/UGC CARE LISTED). Additionally, candidates must have presented two papers in conferences or seminars with evidence in the form of presentation certificates and/or reprints. These requirements ensure that research scholars have demonstrated their research capability and contribution to the field before final thesis submission.
Ques. What happens if I cannot complete my Ph.D. within the maximum duration of 6 years?
Ans. If a candidate cannot submit their thesis within the maximum duration of 6 years, they can apply for extension with justification and supervisor's recommendation. The university may grant a maximum grace period of 1 year beyond the normal maximum period (in exceptional circumstances), provided in six-month increments. However, prescribed fees must be paid for the extended period. If the thesis is not submitted even after the extended period, the registration is automatically cancelled without further notice.
Ques. Are there any exemptions from the entrance examination?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have qualified for fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET (including JRF), UGC-CSIR-NET (including JRF), SLET, GATE, or similar level national tests are exempted from the entrance examination. However, these candidates must still appear for the interview component. M.Phil. full-time and part-time candidates are not exempted from the entrance examination and must appear for both written test and interview.
