Ques. What is the difference between full-time and part-time Ph.D. programs at VMRF?
Ans. Full-time Ph.D. scholars are required to maintain continuous residential attendance at the institution and cannot undertake any external employment or pursue other programs simultaneously. They are eligible for higher research fellowships (Rs. 25,000-30,000 per month) and have access to all institutional facilities. Part-time scholars (external) work outside the institution and must complete a minimum of 45 days per year of residential attendance; they pay higher tuition fees (Rs. 75,000/year) and are not eligible for the same fellowship amounts. Full-time programs typically have a minimum duration of 3 years, while part-time programs may take longer.
Ques. Is the entrance examination mandatory for all Ph.D. candidates?
Ans. No, candidates who have qualified for fellowship or scholarship in UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE, CEED, or similar national-level tests are exempted from the entrance examination. However, they must still appear for the interview round, which carries 30 marks and is weighted at 30% in the final selection. M.Phil. full-time and part-time candidates are not exempted from the entrance examination and must appear for both the written test and interview.
Ques. What are the publication requirements for Ph.D. completion?
Ans. According to VMRF regulations, Ph.D. scholars must publish their research in indexed journals recognized by the university, including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, or UGC CARE listed journals. The exact number of publications required may vary by discipline and is monitored by the Research Advisory Committee. Scholars are also encouraged to present their research at national and international conferences. These publications and presentations are evaluated during the annual monitoring committee meetings to assess research progress and determine fellowship continuation.
Ques. How is the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) constituted and what is its role?
Ans. The RAC comprises the research supervisor (convener), two experts selected by the Vice-Chancellor (one internal from the same or different department, one external from outside VMRF), and the co-supervisor if applicable. The RAC reviews the research proposal, finalizes the research topic, guides the scholar throughout the program, reviews pre-synopsis presentations, and acts as the Academic Integrity Panel for plagiarism checks. The RAC meets at least twice yearly, and scholars must submit half-yearly progress reports. The committee ensures that the research is original, feasible, and contributes to new knowledge in the field of biochemistry.
Ques. What happens if I cannot complete the Ph.D. within 6 years?
Ans. The maximum duration for Ph.D. completion is 6 years from the date of registration. Extension beyond this period is possible only in exceptional cases and requires approval from the university. An extension fee of Rs. 10,000 per 6-month period is charged for any extension beyond the maximum duration. Scholars seeking extension must submit a formal request with justification to the Ph.D. section. If a scholar discontinues the program prematurely, they are required to repay the last three months of fellowship amount drawn. It is advisable to plan research work efficiently to complete within the stipulated timeframe.
Ques. What support is available for research ethics and plagiarism prevention?
Ans. VMRF has constituted an Ethics Board to maintain research integrity and ensure compliance with research ethics standards. All Ph.D. research involving human subjects, animals, or sensitive data requires institutional ethical committee clearance. The university has implemented plagiarism detection tools and requires scholars to submit plagiarism check certificates before thesis submission. The Research Advisory Committee acts as the Academic Integrity Panel and reviews all research for originality. Mandatory coursework includes a paper on 'Research & Publications Ethics' to educate scholars on ethical research practices, data integrity, and responsible publication. Violations of research ethics are investigated and appropriate action is taken as per university policy.
