VMU LLM FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between a one-year LLM and a two-year LLM program?
Ans. A one-year LLM program is more focused and intensive, covering specialized subjects in corporate and financial law with emphasis on practical application through internships and capstone projects. It is ideal for working professionals or those seeking quick specialization. A two-year LLM offers more in-depth theoretical knowledge and broader coverage of subjects. The one-year LLM at VMLS is recognized and valued equally in the job market, particularly for corporate law positions, as it provides crisp, industry-relevant knowledge without the extended time commitment.
Ques. Is the LLM in Corporate and Financial Law from VMLS recognized for practicing law in India?
Ans. The LLM degree from VMLS is a postgraduate qualification recognized by Vinayaka Missions Research Foundation (VMRF), which is a deemed university. However, an LLM alone does not authorize you to practice law independently in India. To practice law, you must have an LLB degree and be enrolled with the Bar Council of India. The LLM serves as an advanced specialization that enhances your expertise and career prospects in corporate law, financial institutions, and legal consultancy roles.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing an LLM in Corporate and Financial Law?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as corporate lawyers in law firms, in-house legal counsel in multinational corporations, legal advisors in financial institutions and banks, compliance officers, legal consultants in fintech companies, and regulatory specialists. The specialization in corporate and financial law opens doors to roles in mergers and acquisitions, securities law, banking regulation, and corporate governance. Many graduates also pursue roles in government regulatory bodies and international organizations dealing with financial law.
Ques. Does VMLS provide internship opportunities during the LLM program?
Ans. Yes, VMLS mandates a compulsory internship as part of the LLM curriculum. The internship is conducted in collaboration with top law firms, corporate legal departments, and regulatory agencies. This provides real-world exposure to corporate legal practice, client interactions, and transaction handling. The internship is typically conducted during the latter part of the program and is a crucial component for developing practical legal skills alongside theoretical knowledge.
Ques. What is the admission process if I have a valid CLAT PG score instead of VLAT?
Ans. VMLS accepts valid scores from multiple entrance exams including CLAT PG, VLAT, LSAT, CUET-PG, and AILET. If you have a valid CLAT PG score, you can directly participate in the CLAT PG counselling process. You need to register on the CLAT counselling portal, participate in the merit-based allotment rounds, and secure a seat at VMLS. The admission process through CLAT PG is streamlined and coordinated by the Consortium of National Law Universities, making it a transparent and merit-based selection.
Ques. Are scholarships available for LLM students at VMLS, and what are the eligibility criteria?
Ans. Yes, VMLS offers merit-based scholarships worth up to 100% tuition fee waiver for deserving candidates. Scholarships are awarded based on entrance exam performance (CLAT PG rank, VLAT score, LSAT score, etc.). The scholarship categories include 10%, 25%, 50%, and 100% tuition fee waivers. Additionally, VMLS offers scholarships for students from Tamil medium backgrounds and other special categories. Eligible candidates are automatically considered during the admission process based on their merit ranking, and no separate application is required for scholarships.
