SIMATS B.Sc + M.Sc Biotechnology FAQs
Ques. 1. Is there any entrance exam required for admission to the Integrated M.Sc Biotechnology programme at SIMATS?
Ans. No, SIMATS does not require any national-level entrance exam for admission to the Integrated M.Sc Biotechnology programme. Admission is based on marks obtained in Class 12 (with Biology/Biotechnology, Physics, and Chemistry) and performance in a personal interview conducted by the university. Students with strong academic records in science subjects are encouraged to apply directly through the SIMATS admissions portal.
Ques. 2. What is the difference between the Integrated M.Sc Biotechnology and a regular B.Sc Biotechnology programme at SIMATS?
Ans. The Integrated M.Sc Biotechnology is a 5-year programme that awards both a B.Sc and an M.Sc degree upon completion. In contrast, a regular B.Sc Biotechnology is a 3-year programme after which students need to separately apply and qualify for an M.Sc programme. The integrated route saves time, avoids the need for a separate PG entrance exam, and provides a more cohesive curriculum. It is ideal for students who are certain about pursuing postgraduate studies in Biotechnology.
Ques. 3. What kind of job roles can I expect after completing the Integrated M.Sc Biotechnology from SIMATS?
Ans. Graduates of this programme can pursue careers as Research Scientists, Biotech Analysts, Quality Control Officers, Clinical Research Associates, Bioinformatics Analysts, Lab Technicians, and Regulatory Affairs Executives. They can find employment in pharmaceutical companies, biotech firms, research institutes, hospitals, and government organisations such as CSIR, ICMR, and DBT. Many graduates also pursue PhD programmes in India and abroad after completing this course.
Ques. 4. Does SIMATS provide placement support for Integrated M.Sc Biotechnology students?
Ans. SIMATS has an active placement cell that supports students across all programmes. The university has tie-ups with companies such as Cognizant, TCS, Capgemini, Accenture, Bosch, and others. However, placement opportunities for Biotechnology graduates are primarily in research, pharma, and life sciences sectors. The average package reported for science graduates at SIMATS is approximately Rs. 10 LPA. Students are also encouraged to pursue higher studies (PhD) or government research positions.
Ques. 5. Is hostel accommodation available for students of the Integrated M.Sc Biotechnology programme?
Ans. Yes, SIMATS provides hostel accommodation for students. The hostel fees range from approximately Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 1,50,000 per annum depending on the type of room and amenities chosen. Hostel is optional for this programme. The campus is located at Saveetha Nagar, Thandalam, Chennai, and is well-connected by road. Students from outside Chennai are advised to apply for hostel accommodation early as availability may be limited.
Ques. 6. Can I switch to a different specialisation or exit after completing B.Sc in the integrated programme?
Ans. The Integrated M.Sc Biotechnology is designed as a continuous 5-year programme. While the university may allow exit after 3 years with a B.Sc degree in certain circumstances (subject to university regulations and NEP 2020 guidelines), students are generally expected to complete the full 5-year programme. It is advisable to confirm the exit policy directly with the Saveetha College of Liberal Arts and Science admissions office before enrolling.
