BU M.Phil. (Microbial Biotechnology) FAQs
Ques. Is M.Phil. in Microbial Biotechnology still offered at Bharathiar University after the UGC discontinued M.Phil. programmes in 2023?
Ans. The UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations 2022 discontinued M.Phil. programmes nationally from the academic year 2023-24 onwards. However, Bharathiar University may continue to offer M.Phil. for students already enrolled or under transitional provisions. Prospective students are strongly advised to contact the Department of Microbial Biotechnology or the Bharathiar University Admissions Office directly to verify the current status of M.Phil. admissions before applying.
Ques. What is the difference between M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Microbial Biotechnology at Bharathiar University, and which should I choose?
Ans. The M.Phil. is a 1-year (Full Time) research programme that includes coursework and a dissertation, while the Ph.D. is a 3-6 year research programme focused entirely on original research. M.Phil. is suitable for students who want to gain research experience before committing to a full doctoral programme. However, given that UGC has discontinued M.Phil. nationally, students aspiring to a research career are advised to directly pursue a Ph.D. Completing M.Phil. with 55% marks in coursework exempts candidates from the BU-CET entrance test for Ph.D. admission.
Ques. Can M.Phil. scholars at Bharathiar University receive a fellowship or stipend during the programme?
Ans. Yes, M.Phil. scholars enrolled in university departments at Bharathiar University who do not hold a JRF are eligible for the UGC Non-NET Fellowship of ₹8,000/month. Scholars with valid CSIR-JRF or UGC-JRF receive ₹37,000/month. These fellowships are disbursed through the university and are subject to satisfactory academic progress and attendance. Scholars in affiliated colleges are generally not eligible for the Non-NET fellowship.
Ques. What research facilities are available for M.Phil. scholars in the Department of Microbial Biotechnology at Bharathiar University?
Ans. The department has received over ₹3.56 crore in research funding from DST, DBT, UGC, ICMR, DRDO, and RUSA. M.Phil. scholars also have access to the Recombinant Protein Production Unit established under RUSA Phase 1.0 at a cost of ₹50 lakh.
Ques. What are the career options after completing M.Phil. in Microbial Biotechnology from Bharathiar University?
Ans. After completing M.Phil. in Microbial Biotechnology, graduates can pursue a Ph.D. (with exemption from entrance test), apply for lecturer/assistant professor positions in colleges (subject to UGC norms), or work in research and development roles in biotech, pharmaceutical, and food industries. They can also apply for research associate positions in CSIR labs, DRDO, ICMR, and other government research institutions. The M.Phil. degree also qualifies candidates for certain government research and teaching positions.
Ques. How is the M.Phil. dissertation evaluated at Bharathiar University, and what is the submission process?
Ans. The M.Phil. dissertation at Bharathiar University is evaluated through a combination of internal assessment (by the supervisor and Doctoral Research Committee) and external evaluation (by an external examiner appointed by the university). After completing the coursework and research work, scholars submit the dissertation to the university.
