MANUU Ph.D. (Urdu) FAQs
Ques. Is UGC-NET in Urdu mandatory for Ph.D. admission at MANUU, and does it give any advantage?
Ans. UGC-NET in Urdu (Subject Code 26) is not mandatory for Ph.D. admission at MANUU. The primary selection criterion is the MANUU Research Admission Test (RAT), which is a university-conducted written entrance examination. However, holding UGC-NET/JRF gives a significant advantage - NET/JRF qualified candidates are given preference during selection, and JRF holders are exempt from tuition fees and receive a monthly fellowship of ₹37,000 directly from UGC. Given the extremely limited intake of 2 seats, candidates with JRF qualification are in a much stronger position. It is strongly advisable to attempt UGC-NET Urdu alongside preparing for the MANUU RAT.
Ques. What are the main research areas available in Ph.D. Urdu at MANUU, and how do I choose a supervisor?
Ans. The Department of Urdu at MANUU has diverse and well-defined research thrust areas including: Study of Modern Culture, Language and Literature; Deccani Language, Culture and Literature; Codicology-based Higher Research; Oriental Poetics; Modern Theories of Criticism; Linguistics; Translation; Hindustani Cinema; Urdu and Fine Arts; and Azadiyaat (the study of Maulana Azad). After selection through the RAT and certificate verification, admitted scholars are typically assigned or allowed to choose a supervisor based on their proposed research topic and the availability of faculty with matching expertise. It is advisable to identify a potential research area and even contact the department (hod.urdu@manuu.edu.in) before applying to understand faculty availability.
Ques. What is the medium of instruction and examination for Ph.D. Urdu at MANUU?
Ans. The Ph.D. Urdu programme at MANUU is conducted primarily in Urdu. Course work, seminars, pre-submission presentations, and the thesis itself are expected to be in Urdu. This is a key distinguishing feature of MANUU compared to other universities where Urdu Ph.D. programmes may be conducted in English or Hindi. Candidates must have strong written and spoken Urdu proficiency. The RAT entrance examination is also conducted in Urdu. This makes MANUU the preferred destination for scholars who wish to pursue authentic Urdu-medium doctoral research.
Ques. How long does it typically take to complete the Ph.D. Urdu at MANUU, and what are the key milestones?
Ans. The minimum duration is 3 years and the maximum is 5 years. Key milestones include: completion of coursework (typically in the first year), submission and approval of the research proposal/synopsis, regular progress reviews, a pre-submission seminar presentation (mandatory before thesis submission), and the final viva-voce examination. MANUU regularly publishes viva-voce notices on its website, and based on these, most scholars complete their Ph.D. within 4-5 years. Extensions beyond 5 years require special permission from the university. Scholars are expected to publish research papers in recognised journals as part of their doctoral work.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after Ph.D. Urdu from MANUU?
Ans. A Ph.D. in Urdu from MANUU opens strong career pathways in academia - particularly as Assistant Professor in Urdu departments at universities and colleges across India, where Urdu is a recognised subject under UGC. MANUU's central university status and its reputation as the premier Urdu institution in India make its Ph.D. degree highly regarded. Beyond academia, career options include roles as Urdu translators and interpreters in government bodies (Ministry of Home Affairs, Doordarshan, All India Radio), Urdu editors and journalists in Urdu print and digital media, content developers for Urdu digital platforms, and researchers in cultural and literary organisations. The growing demand for Urdu content in OTT platforms and digital media has also created new opportunities for Urdu scholars.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. Urdu at MANUU while working, and is there a part-time option?
Ans. The full-time Ph.D. Urdu programme (covered in this article) requires regular physical presence on the Hyderabad campus and cannot be pursued while working full-time elsewhere. However, MANUU separately offers a Ph.D. in Sponsored/Self-Financing Part-Time mode for working professionals, which is conducted through a different admission cycle (typically in the winter/January session). The part-time mode requires the candidate to be a sponsored employee (with employer's NOC) or a self-financing professional. The part-time Ph.D. has a different fee structure and admission process. Candidates interested in the part-time option should watch for the separate notification on the MANUU admissions page (manuu.edu.in/notifications/Admissions), which is usually released in January each year.
