MANUU Ph.D. Mathematics FAQs
Ques. Is Urdu language knowledge mandatory for Ph.D. Mathematics at MANUU, even for a science subject?
Ans. Yes, Urdu language proficiency is a mandatory eligibility criterion at MANUU for all programmes, including Ph.D. Mathematics. Candidates must have studied Urdu as a subject or as a medium of instruction at the 10th, 12th, or graduation level. This is a unique requirement of MANUU as it is India's only central university dedicated to Urdu-medium education. Even for technical and science programmes, this Urdu language criterion applies without exception. Candidates who do not have Urdu in their academic background are not eligible to apply, regardless of their academic performance in Mathematics.
Ques. What are the specific research areas available for Ph.D. Mathematics at MANUU? Which area has the most active research?
Ans. The Department of Mathematics at MANUU has faculty with research interests in Wavelet and its applications (including biomedical signal processing), Algebra, Analysis, Fluid Mechanics, and Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy. Among these, Wavelet and its applications is one of the more active research areas, with faculty members working on applications in biomedical engineering and signal processing. Candidates are strongly advised to visit the department's official page at manuu.edu.in/University/SOS/Maths/Profile and contact the Head of Department (Dr. Khaja Moinuddin, hod.maths@manuu.edu.in) to identify a suitable supervisor before applying.
Ques. With 23 seats available, how competitive is Ph.D. Mathematics admission at MANUU compared to other Ph.D. programmes?
Ans. Ph.D. Mathematics at MANUU has 23 seats, which is significantly higher than most other Ph.D. programmes at the university (for example, Computer Science has only 7 seats). Of these 23 seats, 60% (approximately 14 seats) are reserved for candidates with UGC-NET/JRF qualifications, and the remaining 40% (approximately 9 seats) are filled through the MANUU Entrance Test. While the seat count is relatively higher, the Urdu language requirement limits the eligible applicant pool. Candidates with strong mathematical foundations and Urdu background have a reasonable chance of securing admission.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. Mathematics at MANUU if I have an M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics or Statistics?
Ans. The eligibility criteria for Ph.D. Mathematics at MANUU specifically requires a postgraduate degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics with a minimum of 55% marks. Candidates with M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics are eligible. However, candidates with M.Sc. in Statistics or other related disciplines may not be directly eligible unless their degree is considered equivalent to Mathematics by the university. It is advisable to contact the Department of Mathematics or the Directorate of Admissions at MANUU directly to confirm eligibility before applying, especially for interdisciplinary or related postgraduate qualifications.
Ques. What is the difference between the regular Ph.D. Mathematics (Full Time) and the Part-Time Ph.D. in Mathematics at MANUU?
Ans. MANUU offers both full-time and part-time (Sponsored/Self-Financing) Ph.D. programmes in Mathematics. The full-time programme requires candidates to be present on campus regularly and is the standard research programme with 23 seats. The part-time programme is designed for working professionals who are sponsored by their employer or self-financing, and it has a separate admission cycle (typically in the winter session, January-February). The part-time programme has its own Research Admission Test (RAT) and interview process. The full-time programme is more suitable for candidates seeking fellowships and full-time research engagement, while the part-time programme suits those already employed in academic or research institutions.
Ques. How does the MANUU Non-NET Fellowship work for Ph.D. Mathematics scholars? Is it guaranteed for all admitted students?
Ans. The UGC Non-NET Fellowship of Rs. 8,000 per month is provided by MANUU to regular Ph.D. scholars who do not hold any other fellowship (such as JRF, MANF, etc.). It is not automatically guaranteed for all admitted students; scholars must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance and abide by the university's rules and regulations to remain eligible. The fellowship is subject to the availability of funds as per UGC and university guidelines. Scholars who hold a UGC-JRF or Maulana Azad National Fellowship are not eligible for the Non-NET Fellowship simultaneously. Students are advised to check the latest fellowship notification on the MANUU website at the time of admission.
