MANUU Ph.D. (English) FAQs
Ques. What makes the Ph.D. (English) at MANUU different from other central universities offering the same programme?
Ans. The Ph.D. (English) at MANUU is distinctive because of its bilingual research framework, where scholars are encouraged to work at the intersection of English and Urdu literary and cultural traditions. The department's research areas include English-Urdu Translation Studies, Muslim Literature in English, and Indian Writing in English, which are niche areas not commonly available at other universities. Additionally, the programme is available at three campuses (Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Budgam), giving scholars flexibility in choosing their research location. The extremely affordable fee structure (total Rs. 24,600 for the entire programme) is another major advantage.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. (English) at MANUU if I do not know Urdu?
Ans. Yes, you can apply even without formal Urdu proficiency, but with a condition. MANUU gives preference to candidates who have studied Urdu as a subject or medium at the 10th, 12th, or graduation level. If you do not have such proof, you can still be admitted conditionally, but you must enroll in and pass the Diploma in Urdu offered by the university before your degree is awarded. The research and thesis can be written in English, so the Urdu requirement is primarily for the medium of instruction and departmental communication.
Ques. What is the Research Admission Test (RAT) pattern for Ph.D. (English) at MANUU?
Ans. The RAT is a 100-mark written test conducted in bilingual mode (English and Urdu). It is divided into two parts: Part 1 covers Research Methodology (50 marks), which includes research design, literature review, sampling, and academic writing; Part 2 covers subject-specific knowledge in English literature, language, and linguistics (50 marks). Candidates must score at least 50% in the RAT to qualify for the interview stage. JRF holders are directly called for the interview without appearing in the RAT.
Ques. How many seats are available for Ph.D. (English) at MANUU for 2026-27, and which campus should I prefer?
Ans. For 2026-27, MANUU has announced 4 seats at Hyderabad, 7 seats at the Lucknow Satellite Campus, and 2 seats at MANUU Arts and Science College for Women, Budgam (Srinagar). The Hyderabad campus offers the best research infrastructure, library facilities, and access to the main university departments. The Lucknow campus has the highest number of seats and is well-suited for scholars from North India. The Budgam campus is exclusively for women candidates. You must specify your preferred campus at the time of application.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing Ph.D. (English) from MANUU?
Ans. A Ph.D. in English from MANUU, a NAAC A+ accredited central university, qualifies graduates for Assistant Professor positions in colleges and universities as per UGC norms. The bilingual and interdisciplinary focus of the programme also opens opportunities in translation, publishing, content development, and language education. Many MANUU Ph.D. English alumni have gone on to teach in government and private colleges, work with educational NGOs, and pursue post-doctoral research. The specialization in English-Urdu literary studies is particularly valued in institutions serving minority and Urdu-medium communities.
Ques. Is there a residency requirement for Ph.D. (English) scholars at MANUU? Can I work on my research from home?
Ans. The full-time Ph.D. (English) programme requires regular physical presence at the campus, especially during the mandatory coursework period (first two semesters). After completing coursework and registering the thesis topic, scholars are expected to maintain regular contact with their supervisor and attend departmental seminars and pre-submission presentations. While there is no strict daily attendance requirement after coursework, scholars must maintain 75% overall attendance to remain eligible for the UGC Non-NET Fellowship. Remote work on research is possible to some extent, but full-time scholars are expected to be campus-based for the majority of their programme duration.
