MANUU Ph.D. CSE FAQs
Ques. Is Urdu knowledge mandatory to apply for Ph.D. CSE at MANUU? I am from a non-Urdu background?
Ans. Yes, Urdu proficiency is a mandatory requirement for admission to all regular programmes at MANUU, including Ph.D. CSE. However, MANUU has a practical provision for candidates from non-Urdu backgrounds: if you are otherwise academically qualified (Master's in CS/IT with 55%+), you can be granted conditional admission. You will then be required to pass a 4-credit Certificate Course in Urdu offered by the university before you are permitted to submit your doctoral thesis. This means your research work can proceed in parallel, but the Urdu course must be cleared before the final submission stage.
Ques. I have qualified UGC-NET but not JRF. Do I still get exemption from the RAT written test?
Ans. No, only candidates who have qualified UGC-NET with JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) are exempted from the written Research Admission Test (RAT). Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET without JRF (i.e., only the Lectureship/Assistant Professor eligibility) are NOT exempted and must appear for the RAT. Similarly, CSIR-NET JRF holders in relevant subjects are also exempted. If you have only NET without JRF, you must appear for the RAT and score at least 50% to qualify for the interview round.
Ques. What is the difference between the regular Ph.D. CSE and the Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Scheme at MANUU?
Ans. The regular Ph.D. CSE at MANUU is a standard doctoral programme with 7 seats, open to all eligible candidates, with admission through the RAT. The Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Scheme is a separate MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) funded programme specifically for research in AI and Machine Learning. It has its own separate notification (usually released around July-August), separate entrance test, and a higher fellowship of Rs. 25,000 per month. The Visvesvaraya scheme also has a part-time track for working professionals. Both programmes are offered by the same Department of CSIT at MANUU but are distinct in terms of funding, intake, and research focus.
Ques. With only 7 seats available, how competitive is the Ph.D. CSE admission at MANUU? What is the typical selection process like?
Ans. The Ph.D. CSE programme at MANUU is indeed highly competitive given the limited intake of 7 seats. In the 2025-26 cycle, the university received significantly more applications than available seats. The selection is based on RAT performance (70% weightage) and interview (30% weightage). JRF-qualified candidates, who are directly called for the interview, tend to have a strong advantage. Candidates are advised to prepare thoroughly in Research Methodology and core CS/IT subjects (Data Structures, Algorithms, DBMS, OS, Computer Networks, AI/ML) for the RAT. Having a well-defined research proposal and clarity on your research area significantly improves your chances in the interview.
Ques. Can a working professional apply for Ph.D. CSE at MANUU? Is there a part-time option?
Ans. Yes, MANUU offers a Ph.D. in Computer Science in Sponsored/Self-Financing (Part-Time) mode for working professionals. This track requires a minimum of 3 years of full-time relevant work experience and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the employer. Part-time scholars must complete a mandatory 6-month residency at the Hyderabad campus for coursework. The fee structure for the part-time mode is higher (approximately Rs. 22,000 per semester). The admission notification for the part-time mode is typically released separately (usually in January-February) with its own Research Admission Test (RAT). Part-time scholars are not eligible for university fellowships or the UGC Non-NET Fellowship.
Ques. What research areas and facilities are available in the CSIT Department at MANUU for Ph.D. scholars?
Ans. The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology at MANUU has dedicated young faculty members and state-of-the-art laboratories. Current active research areas include Artificial Intelligence, Personalized Learning, Machine Learning, Computational Sustainability, Blockchain Technology, Semantic Web, Internet of Things (IoT), and allied fields of CS and IT. The department also has a dedicated YouTube channel (CS&IT MANUU) for academic events. Ph.D. scholars have access to the Saiyid Hamid Library with e-ShodhSindhu and INFLIBNET resources, SWAYAM/NPTEL courses, and virtual labs. The university also has an active research culture with regular seminars, pre-Ph.D. submission presentations, and viva-voce examinations conducted throughout the year.
