IILM University PhD Liberal Arts FAQs
Ques. Which disciplines fall under Liberal Arts here?
Ans. The doctoral programme spans English, psychology, economics, sociology and political science. Scholars choose a discipline and research area in consultation with a supervisor, and interdisciplinary topics that cut across the humanities and social sciences are also encouraged. Field-based research in disciplines like sociology can extend the timeline, so scholars plan their data collection carefully with their supervisors. Archival and survey work can require travel, so scholars build realistic timelines into their research plans from the outset. Scholars present early findings in regular research seminars.
Ques. How long does the doctorate take?
Ans. The minimum duration is 3 years, comprising coursework, a comprehensive examination and thesis research. Completion often extends beyond three years depending on fieldwork, publication requirements and the time needed to defend the final thesis. Interdisciplinary proposals that connect, for example, economics with public policy are welcomed, provided a suitable supervisor is available to guide them. The committee looks for a clear research question and feasibility, so a well-framed proposal strengthens an applicant’s case considerably. The committee communicates its decision shortly after interviews.
Ques. What is the admission route?
Ans. Candidates take a research aptitude test and then an interview with the research committee. Those holding UGC-NET or a JRF are exempt from the written test and move directly to the interview, where the proposed research area is discussed. The early choice of discipline matters because it sets the methodology coursework, whether that leans toward qualitative, quantitative or archival methods. This early grounding helps scholars avoid changing direction midway, which is a common reason doctoral timelines stretch. A research plan is finalised with the supervisor early on.
Ques. What does the programme cost?
Ans. The total fee is INR 3,00,000, payable as INR 1,00,000 per year across the minimum three years. Hostel charges of INR 1,42,000 per year are separate for scholars opting for on-campus accommodation. Scholars opting for campus accommodation should account for the separate hostel charge when estimating the total cost of their research years. Commuting day scholars sidestep the hostel charge, keeping the overall cost of the doctorate lower for local candidates. Access to journals and archives supports the literature review.
Ques. Is there structured coursework before research?
Ans. Yes. Scholars complete coursework and clear a comprehensive examination before registering their thesis. This phase builds research methodology, academic writing and theoretical grounding so that independent doctoral research rests on a strong methodological base. The methodology coursework also covers academic writing and research ethics, which strengthens the quality of the eventual thesis and publications. Regular work-in-progress seminars give scholars feedback from peers and faculty long before the final thesis defence. Teaching assistance opportunities help scholars gain classroom experience.
Ques. What careers follow this doctorate?
Ans. Graduates move into roles such as assistant professors, researchers and analysts in think tanks, policy bodies and development organisations. The degree also supports editorial, consulting and advisory work where deep humanities or social science expertise is valued. Beyond academia, graduates contribute to research in non-profit organisations, media houses and consulting firms that need rigorous social science analysis. The analytical and writing skills built during the programme also transfer well into editorial and advisory careers. Workshops on publishing guide scholars toward suitable journals.
