IILM University PhD CSE FAQs
Ques. What is the minimum duration of the Ph.D?
Ans. The doctoral programme runs for a minimum of 3 years, including coursework, a comprehensive examination and thesis research. Many scholars take longer depending on the depth of their research, the publication requirements and the progress of their experimental work. Scholars are encouraged to publish in peer-reviewed venues during this period, which is why the timeline often stretches according to research output. Supervisors typically expect a couple of quality publications before the thesis is submitted, which shapes the realistic completion timeline. Scholars present progress in periodic departmental research seminars.
Ques. How are candidates selected?
Ans. Selection is based on a research aptitude test followed by an interview with the research committee. Candidates who have already qualified UGC-NET or hold a JRF are exempt from the written test and proceed directly to the interview stage. The interview also assesses the fit between a candidate’s proposed topic and the expertise of the available supervisors before a final offer is confirmed. Candidates are advised to read a prospective supervisor’s recent work before the interview so the discussion on the topic is productive. The committee shares its decision soon after the interview round.
Ques. What research areas are available in CSE?
Ans. Scholars can work in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, computer networks and software systems. The research area is fixed in consultation with the assigned supervisor, and the choice shapes the coursework and the eventual thesis topic. The specific area is locked early because it determines the coursework electives a scholar must clear before moving to full-time thesis work. The chosen area also influences which conferences and journals a scholar targets, so it is a decision worth making deliberately. A research plan is agreed with the supervisor in the first months.
Ques. What is the fee for the doctoral programme?
Ans. The total fee is INR 3,00,000, billed at INR 1,00,000 per year across the minimum three years. Hostel charges of INR 1,42,000 per year are separate for resident scholars who choose campus accommodation. Resident scholars who take campus accommodation should budget for the separate hostel charge when planning the overall cost of the doctorate. Day scholars avoid the hostel charge entirely, which is a meaningful saving for those who can commute to the Greater Noida campus. Library and database access supports literature review work.
Ques. Is coursework part of the Ph.D?
Ans. Yes. The first phase includes structured coursework and a comprehensive examination that scholars must clear before formally registering their thesis. This stage strengthens research methodology and subject depth before full-time independent research begins under the supervisor. Clearing the comprehensive examination is a milestone that formally converts a provisional admission into registered doctoral candidacy at the university. Only after this milestone does the university allot the final thesis title and confirm the supervisory committee for the scholar. Doctoral candidates may assist in teaching to gain experience.
Ques. What careers follow a CSE doctorate here?
Ans. Graduates pursue roles as assistant professors, research scientists and senior engineers in research and development teams. The doctorate also supports postdoctoral positions and leadership roles in data science and artificial intelligence groups across academia and industry. Industry research and development teams increasingly value doctoral training in machine learning, so the degree is not limited to academic careers alone. Some graduates also move into data science leadership, where a doctorate signals the depth needed for advanced research roles. Conference travel is encouraged to build a research network.
