Ques. Who is eligible for lateral entry?
Ans. Lateral entry is open to candidates with a three-year engineering diploma in a relevant branch and a minimum of 50 percent aggregate. B.Sc graduates with Mathematics are also eligible. Selected applicants join directly in the second year of the B.Tech programme. Diploma holders from computer science, electronics and allied branches are the natural fit, and B.Sc Mathematics graduates can also use this route. Candidates from instrumentation and information technology diplomas also commonly take this route into the AI specialisation. Bridge modules help lateral students align with the second-year syllabus.
Ques. How long is the lateral entry programme?
Ans. Because students join in the second year, the programme runs for 3 years rather than four. The saved year is the main advantage of lateral entry for diploma holders, while the degree awarded is the same B.Tech as the regular route. Joining directly in the second year means lateral students complete the same final-year project and graduate alongside their regular-entry peers. The shared final-year project means lateral and regular students are assessed on the same standard at graduation. Applicants receive clear guidance during the merit assessment.
Ques. Is an entrance exam required?
Ans. Admission is based on diploma merit followed by a personal interview, so a national entrance exam is not mandatory. Candidates apply through the IILM portal, submit diploma marksheets for assessment and attend the interview before a merit-based offer is made. Submitting clean, complete diploma marksheets speeds up the merit assessment, after which the interview confirms the candidate’s readiness for the AI track. Ans. The total tuition for the three years is INR 6,75,000, billed at INR 2,25,000 per year for this computer science specialisation. Hostel charges of INR 1,42,000 per year are separate, and merit scholarships can reduce the net tuition. Annual billing applies at the computer science rate, and merit scholarships can still reduce the net tuition for high-performing diploma holders.
