The Open University fees for Indian students span £4,420 (₹5.65 Lakhs) part-time UG to  £8,840 (₹11.3 Lakhs) full-time PG per year. Popular Masters programmes for Indian students include MSc Cyber Security, MSc Data Science, and MSc Computing (Software Development).

The October 2026 intake is open now, with module registration closing in early September 2026. February 2027 is the next major entry point, followed by April 2027 and May 2027, so entry to The Open University is flexible year-round.

  • UG part-time: £4,420 (₹5.65 Lakhs)
  • UG full-time equivalent: £8,840 (₹11.3 Lakhs)
  • PG full-time (up to 120 credits/year): up to £18,805 (₹24.32 Lakhs) per year
  • MBA (F61) total: £21,240 to £23,200 (NR ₹27.17 to ₹29.67 Lakhs)

A complete BA or BSc (360 credits) costs approximately £24,552 (₹31.76 Lakhs) in tuition, whether taken part-time over six years or full-time in three. Because The Open University is fully online, you pay tuition only, no UK visa fee, no relocation, no international accommodation costs.

Exchange rate used: 1 GBP = ₹129.34 (source: xe.com).

The Open University Tuition Fees by Programme for Indian Students

The Open University prices every course by credit, not by degree. A standard UK undergraduate degree needs 360 credits (typically a BA or BSc), and a Masters needs 180 credits. International students pay a flat per-credit rate, so annual outlay depends on how many credits you register per year.

The Open University Undergraduate Fees: 2026/27

All undergraduate programmes for international students, including BA Social Sciences (Psychology), BA English Literature, BA Health and Social Care, and BSc Computing IT, are billed at the same per-credit rate.

Study Mode Credits per Year Annual Fee (GBP) Annual Fee (INR) Time to Complete 360-credit BA/BSc
Part-time 60 £4,420 ₹5.65 Lakhs 6 years
Full-time equivalent 120 £8,840 ₹11.3 Lakhs 3 years

The Open University Postgraduate Fees

Postgraduate fees vary more, because per-module pricing differs across faculties. Full-time MSc programmes in Computing, Cyber Security, and Data Science sit at the top of the range; part-time Masters degrees taken over two or more years cost significantly less per year.

Programme Duration Fee (GBP) Fee (INR)
M.B.A 2 to 7 years £21,240 to £23,200 INR ₹27.17 to ₹29.67 Lakhs
M.A Childhood and Youth 3 years part time £8,850 ₹11.32 Lakhs

M.Sc Mental Health Science

3 years part time £10,500 ₹13.43 Lakhs

M.Sc Forensic Psychological Studies

Cost of Living for The Open University Distance Learners in India

The Open University is fully online, so most Indian students study from home in India, they do not relocate to Milton Keynes. The Open University’s cost-of-living component is therefore the incremental home-study cost in India, plus the optional expense of attending residential schools in the UK for select modules.

Expense Monthly (Local) Monthly (INR) Annual (INR) Notes for Indian Students
Home broadband upgrade (for OU study) ₹1,200 ₹1,200 ₹14,400 Fibre 100 Mbps or higher recommended for live tutorials.
Study laptop (amortised over degree) ₹4,200 ₹4,200 ₹50,000 one-time Mid-range laptop, spread across three-year degree.
Set books and supplementary reading (per module) - - ₹5,000 - ₹8,000/module Most core material is included in the fee; a few modules recommend outside reading.
Optional UK residential school (per visit) - - £600 - £1,000
(₹77,604 - ₹1.29 Lakhs)
Includes short-stay Visitor Visa, flights, and school fee; only some modules require or offer this.

The Open University Scholarships for Indian Students

The Open University offers very limited direct scholarships for international students. Indian applicants typically fund their degree through OUSBA payment plans, employer sponsorship, or external UK-government and Indian trust schemes.

Scheme Value Eligibility for Indian Students Type
OUSBA (OU Student Budget Account) Monthly instalment plan Open to Indian students studying from India Payment plan (not a scholarship)
Sanctuary Scholarship Full fee waiver Asylum seekers only, not applicable to standard Indian applicants Restricted
OU Bursaries Variable UK-resident students only Domestic only

The Open University Tuition Deposit and Payment Options

The Open University does not require a single large upfront tuition deposit. Because study is modular, you pay each module’s fee at the point of registration, and OUSBA (the OU Student Budget Account) can spread that fee across monthly instalments if you prefer. There is no Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS, the document needed for a UK Student Visa), because Indian students studying from India do not apply for a Student Visa.

The Open University Methods of Payment for Indian Students

  • OUSBA (OU Student Budget Account): the OU’s own monthly payment plan for module fees, open to Indian students studying from India; the fee is split across the module’s duration.
  • International bank transfer or telegraphic transfer: pay each module’s fee in one shot from your Indian bank account, direct to the OU via SWIFT.
  • Forex card: preloaded in GBP to avoid daily conversion swings, saving 2-3% versus a raw wire transfer.
  • Education loan disbursement: Indian public and private lenders can release funds directly to the OU on your acceptance letter; ask for tranche-based release aligned to module registration.
  • Employer sponsorship: direct invoicing to your employer, common for MBA (F61) and MSc Cyber Security registrations.

Steps to Pay Tuition at The Open University for International Students

  1. Choose your intake and modules on the OU course page and complete online registration.
  2. Confirm your international-student status and receive the registration invoice.
  3. Select payment method: OUSBA monthly plan, single SWIFT transfer, forex card, or education-loan disbursement.
  4. For OUSBA, submit the online agreement; the first instalment is charged before module start.
  5. Retain every payment receipt as proof of enrolment and for tax-benefit claims under Section 80E of the Income Tax Act.

The Open University confirms module enrolment on receipt of payment (or on OUSBA agreement acceptance). There is no full-payment discount published for international students; the OUSBA plan is offered as the standard concession for spreading cost across the module duration.

Source: Open University ways-to-pay and OUSBA guidance pages (open.ac.uk).

Tip for Indian Students: Complete your OUSBA agreement at least two weeks before the October 2026 intake registration cut-off (early September 2026), because a rejected first instalment can push your enrolment to the November 2026 intake. International bank transfers via SWIFT typically take three to five working days; start any wire at least a week before the module registration deadline.

Hidden Costs of Studying at The Open University

The Open University’s distance-first model removes most of the standard hidden costs of a UK degree (IHS, visa, UK accommodation deposit, weekly UK groceries). What remains is smaller, but worth budgeting for the October 2026 intake.

  • Prescribed textbooks and supplementary reading: ₹5,000 - ₹8,000 per module; some modules include all materials in the fee.
  • Study laptop and second monitor: one-time ₹50,000 - ₹80,000 for a mid-range setup capable of running virtual labs (needed for MSc Computing and MSc Cyber Security).
  • Home broadband upgrade: ₹500 - ₹1,000 extra per month over your current plan, for reliable live tutorials.
  • Optional UK residential school: £600 - £1,000 (₹77,604 - ₹1.29 Lakhs) per visit, including short-stay Visitor Visa, flights, and hotel.
  • International bank transfer fees: ₹500 - ₹1,500 per transfer, plus a 2-3% forex mark-up if you skip a forex card.
  • Module resit or exam re-registration: variable per module, applied only if you resit an assessment.

Budget approximately ₹1 - 1.5 Lakhs for first-year hidden costs on top of tuition, dropping to under ₹50,000 in later years once your laptop and broadband are set up.

Note: The cost most families forget is the international bank transfer mark-up, which quietly adds ₹15,000 - ₹25,000 per year on a full-time MSc paid via SWIFT for the October 2026 intake. Switching to a preloaded GBP forex card or routing through OUSBA eliminates most of this.

Fee Saving Strategies at The Open University for Indian Students

The most time-sensitive lever for the October 2026 intake is locking the 2026/27 fee before September’s registration cut-off. From there, savings compound through module pacing, tax benefits, and employer sponsorship.

  • Lock the 2026/27 rate: register for October or November 2026 to secure £8,184 (₹10.59 Lakhs) per year for 120 credits, before the 2027/28 rate applies from the October 2027 intake.
  • Match pace to cash flow: OU’s per-credit model lets you switch between 60 and 120 credits per year mid-degree; a year at 60 credits cuts annual outlay from £8,184 (₹10.59 Lakhs) to £4,092 (₹5.29 Lakhs).
  • Section 80E of the Income Tax Act: interest paid on an Indian education loan for The Open University is fully deductible for up to eight years, materially reducing the effective loan cost.
  • Employer sponsorship: the AMBA-accredited MBA (F61) and MSc Cyber Security are commonly funded by Indian employers; OU invoices the employer directly, and you keep your salary.
  • Skip the optional residential school: most modules do not require a UK residential; skipping saves ₹77,604 - ₹1.29 Lakhs per visit without affecting your degree classification.
  • Continue Indian earnings during study: because you do not relocate, your Indian salary continues; this typically offsets 60-100% of loan EMI during the study period.

Is The Open University Worth the Cost for Indian Students

A full Open University MSc costs ₹25-26 Lakhs total; an MBA costs ₹24-34 Lakhs. Set against an on-campus UK Masters at ₹55-70 Lakhs, The Open University delivers UK-quality accreditation at 40-50% of the cost, without pausing your Indian salary.

  • The AMBA-accredited MBA (F61) sits alongside on-campus MBAs from other AMBA-accredited UK schools; the accreditation is identical.
  • UK Government post-study work rights (the Graduate Route Visa) do not apply to distance-mode learners, so payback is anchored in the Indian job market: a mid-career MBA graduate from an AMBA-accredited programme in India commands roughly ₹18-30 Lakhs annually, comfortably covering a ₹40,000 per month loan EMI on a ₹30 Lakh borrowing.

For Indian working professionals, the trade-off is clear: no relocation risk, continued salary, and a globally recognised UK qualification, in exchange for a fully online study experience and no automatic UK work-visa route.

Key Insight: The net cost after adjusting for continued Indian earnings during the October 2026 - August 2028 MSc study window can fall to ₹8-12 Lakhs of net outflow, making The Open University one of the fastest-payback UK qualifications for Indian working professionals.

Budget ₹25 Lakhs for a full-time Open University MSc, or ₹24-34 Lakhs for the AMBA-accredited MBA (F61), both delivered fully online from India with no visa, no relocation, and no UK living costs. Register for the October 2026 intake before early September 2026 to lock the 2026/27 rate, then split your fee via OUSBA monthly instalments. If external funding matters, target the November 2026 IST 05:30 Chevening deadline for the October 2027 cycle. For most Indian working professionals, the combination of low relative cost, continued Indian salary, and AMBA accreditation makes The Open University a straightforward choice.

The Open University Fees FAQs

Ques. Do Indian students pay international fees at The Open University?

Ans. Yes. Indian students studying from India pay the international student rate, £4,092 or £8,184 per year for undergraduate courses, and up to £18,805 per year for full-time postgraduate programmes. There is no UK visa fee or IHS because study is fully online.

Ques. Does The Open University offer scholarships for Indian students?

Ans. Direct Open University scholarships for Indian international students are minimal. The Sanctuary Scholarship is for asylum seekers only, and OU Bursaries are UK-resident only. Indian applicants typically fund via OUSBA monthly instalments, employer sponsorship, JN Tata Endowment, or the UK Chevening Scholarship (2027/28 deadline: 5 November 2026 IST 05:30).

Ques. Can I pay The Open University fees in monthly instalments from India?

Ans. Yes. OUSBA (OU Student Budget Account) is a monthly instalment plan open to Indian students studying from India. Each module’s fee is split across the module’s duration, so you register and pay module-by-module rather than in one upfront lump sum.

Ques. Do I need a UK Student Visa to study at The Open University from India?

Ans. No. The Open University delivers all courses online, so Indian students studying from India do not need a UK Student Visa, do not pay the £490 visa fee, and do not pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS, the surcharge for NHS access). This saves ₹3-5 Lakhs in the first year versus an on-campus UK degree.

Course Curriculum

8

An interesting curriculum that covers quite a variety of subjects. My first year involved a broad overview of the arts, my second year specifying more so on literature and creative writing, and then in my final year, I will move onto specialist topics of my choosing. It's very interesting to develop and hone my skills as a student of the arts.
