What Students Say
Likes
- I like the overall atmosphere, facilities, curriculum, research standard, ethics, culture, diversity, location, beautiful award winning campus, and the reputation it has in terms of research output and collaboration.
Course Curriculum
- Since I am pursuing a PhD degree, I don't have to do too many courses. I did two few courses relevant to my research project, which was highly useful and up to date to the current industry standards and research landscape.
- The other undergraduate and postgraduate courses are also very relevant and up to date, with regular feedback from the industry, policy makers, and stakeholders
Admission Experience
- My decision was mainly based on the research project and supervisory team that I was going to work with. The University of Reading is one of the best in terms of weather, climate, and environmental science research in the world, and it works closely with ECMWF and the Met Office, two world leaders in the weather and climate science domain. This particular Doctoral Training Program (DTP), known as AFESP, was offering me a great platform to grow my career in this field with a fully funded scholarship and a great team of experts to work with.
- I had previous work experience of 8 years, along with many publications. Since my education was in CBSE English medium, I didn't have to provide any additional English proficiency proofs for my PhD application. The application process consisted of submitting a detailed application form, as per my research project (AFESP) structure, CV, and list of publications.
- There were multiple rounds of interviews before I was selected. Finally, I had to obtain an ATAS certificate since I was going to register in the Computer Science Department. For Undergraduate and postgraduate studies, there would be IELTS/TOEFL requirements, which I am not very sure of. Please refer to the official Website for more details.
Faculty
- The faculty-to-student ratio is very healthy and optimized as per course modules and classroom size, which are also supported by TAs and Tutors.
- The faculty that I have met and interacted with have left a very positive impression on me, and I have found most of the staff to be very polite, helpful, and professional in their dealings. Mental health support and respect for diversity and equality are given a lot of emphasis.
Campus Life
- All the facilities are really great and state-of-the-art. There are two campus locations in Reading, London Road and Whiteknights, with Whiteknights being the bigger and more beautiful one.
- There are plenty of clubs, pubs, and cafes both on and off campus, with great social life and entertainment options nearby. The sports complex is huge and has multiple sports venues. There is a big central Library as well on the Whiteknights campus with an extensive collection and support staff.
Part Time Jobs
- There are multiple part-time options available both on campus and outside, eg, retail outlets, bars, pubs, restaurants, and other management/tech-related roles. Normally, you get support from the careers team and the students' union for securing these options.
Placement
- All these stats are available on the website, but typically, students from all disciplines get job offers and placement options very easily. The sponsorship visa options are limited and tougher nowadays to obtain, but you can explore the Graduate Visa options.
- There are dedicated Campus recruitments based on Job Fairs, and career-focused events and support available for the students and alumni. Popular job websites include LinkedIn, Reed, Jobs.ac.uk, and Indeed
Accommodation
- I rent a Studio apartment outside for 825 GBP per month. There are multiple university accommodations available for a range of 800-1200 GBP per month. I used an online platform to get my accommodation, which is from a private landlord.
Exams
- NO exams for PhD. I had to provide my CV, LOR, Statement of Purpose, List of Publications, and the Application Form, which had some detailed scientific questions.
Fees
- For PhD, the international fees are 22000 GBP per annum, which is covered by my scholarship.
