Course Curriculum

8

  • It was a really difficult course as the expectations from the students were quite high from the very beginning, so I would recommend the University to someone who already has a background and some experience in the subject they choose to pursue.
  • Positive aspects included how the course content was relevant to the industry requirements and the negative aspects were a lack of time to complete the projects.
  • Depending on the attendance you can say we had a 1:5 ratio. Teaching methodology was quite conventional and the course content was sufficient but if it was more streamlined it would have been better.
  • The job market and the requirements are changing very quickly it is best to do some learning beyond the course as well.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to two universities for Automotive and Transportation Design course, one being University of Wales, Swansea and the other being Coventry University, Coventry. I received and offer letter from both and I chose Coventry due it's history and heritage and connections with the automobile industry. University of Wales was fairly new at the time so I pursued Coventry University's course.
  • I decided to go ahead with Coventry University as it was at the forefront of design education since a very long time and many successful designers graduated from this University as their alma mater, the connections with industry is the highlight of the program, with many industry peers visiting the campus very often and also interacting with the students. The admission process included a review of the portfolio followed with an interview.
  • Necessary documents were CV, Portfolio, SOPs, at least 3 letters of recommendation and also IELTS scores but since I was from Telangana my Intermediate English exam score was taken into consideration.
  • One of the major challenges I had to face was the time taken to process the visa and the availability of the visa documents submission slot, If I knew about the time it takes for the processing I would have applied at least 6 months earlier than the course began!
  • I initially applied for the January intake but could not find any visa slots available so I got it deferred to the May intake, the whole admission process itself took around 3-4 months so I would recommend having at least 6 months as a timeline. Since blocking and maintaining of the required funds must be at least for 28 days plus at the time of submission of documents so the funds must lie in your account for at least 3 months and also the gap between getting the offer letter and submission of documents visa slot is another 2 months, finally receiving the visa will take another month.

Class Schedule

8

  • Usually we had around 4 days of classes throughout the week and classes were slotted hour wise with some free time in between.
  • We had around 20 members in the class and out of the class around 60
  • % were Indians, 25 % Chinese and 15 % European students with faculty being European.

Faculty

10

  • Faculty members did assist with helping students in finding work with the connections they had all the time, which is very much appreciated.
  • I respect Aamer Mahmud and Aysar Ghassan a lot for the impact they had over me.

Campus Life

10

  • The university had lots of society to encourage passions in literature, manga, sports, music and even Indian culture.
  • It was a super bustling and active university at all times with the library being open 24x7.
  • Major festivals included Oktoberfest with the whole city transforming into a mini German market and also Christmas when the whole city buzzes to life.

Part Time Jobs

  • The opportunities available on the campus were very limited and opened up only after a few semester. Mostly volunteering roles were offered/available with TAs cropping up sometime but spawned rarely and also very hard to secure, pay was around 12 GBP/hour with a cap of 60 hours per semester. Off-campus opportunities were more preferable since they paid the same and provided 20 hours a week.
  • Students can earn anywhere between 10-15 GBP/hour depending on the role and responsibilities they are in. It is not that difficult to secure a part time if you're patient enough and provided you are willing to travel to the outskirts of the city. There are many job agencies in the city centre which help students secure part-time and full-time work (during vacations) and one can also apply online.

Placement

8

  • Since mine is a highly competitive industry with very few roles cropping up every now and then, only a small percentage secure employment within 6 months of completing their course.
  • In the UK, they can expect anywhere between 24k GBP to 55k GBP right after they graduate. So many students found jobs through networking opportunities in the campus and also through LinkedIn etc.
  • Placement experience was very good for some of my classmates as they got hired by BMW, Rolls-Royce and Land Rover SVT.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • Finding good accommodation remains one of the biggest challenges in studying abroad.
  • There are many websites like Spareroom.co.uk where you can find rooms to rent and Letting Agents in every corner of the city can help you get accommodation, things to keep in mind are one must get a room with a rolling contract and not a fixed contract as if you don't like the accommodation you can leave without breaking the contract.
  • Ideally one should opt for an individual (non-shared) bathroom and kitchen as a shared bathroom as a shared bathroom and kitchen is quite common.

Exams

  • Since I was going to study design there was no particular exam requirement as they review of portfolio and will call for an interview if found suitable.
  • Yes an interview was a part of the application process and one of the faculty members conducted it and checked the overall interest of the candidate and asked questions from the portfolio. Documents checklist included CV, SOP and LORs

Fees

  • When I was studying it was roughly 15 Lakh INR per academic year. It was charged yearly.
  • Estimated monthly expenses were around 1.2 L with the most expensive proportion being the rent for a studio apartment with an attached bathroom (en-suite), rent for a room with an attached bathroom is much more expensive and one should also factor in considerations such as a need for a local guarantor when looking for accommodation.

Scholarship

  • Up to 2,000 GBP concession of the tuition fees (or) a 1 year accommodation contract at one of the University maintained accommodation blocks.
  • This was awarded based on the student profile and also keeps changing on an yearly basis. In case of the fee concession, one is expected to pay the full tuition fees first and then the student will receive the scholarship amount back to him/her by the end of the academic year.
  • One of my batchmate received free accommodation contract for a year (non en-suite)
